War Memorial Park is the center of community activity
War Memorial Park is notable for its longtime statue honoring World War I veterans. The statue was refurbished in conjunction with the addition of plaques commemorating the community’s post-WWI veterans and related armed forces flags. “The previous mayor, Mike Grivetti, it was his dream to bring a great monument here,” says Rhonda Beazely, village clerk. “He fundraised, and the town answered.” The work was unveiled during Memorial Day Services in 2007. The park is located on Main Street, and “Taps” is played over speakers on the 11th hour of the 11th day of each month. “We’re about to have our Patriots Day celebration at the park on 9/11, and we hope to do something for the 250th anniversary of the United States,” Beazely says. “Even though we’re little, we try to do what we can for these big events.” The park hosts a Monday famers market and Friday concerts. It also offers athletic amenities, making it a true community gathering place. Youth and adult ballfields are the featured amenities at Kennedy Park. The village also has a community center that can be rented out for private events. The nearby Illinois River is among the regional waterways that offer an array of outdoor recreation.

Older homes anchor a variety of housing options
Older homes in a variety of shapes and sizes are prominent along the community’s quiet, walkable streets. Some were built as far back as the late 1800s and early 1900s, and several have been renovated. Midcentury ranch, contemporary and custom designs can also be found among the mix of offerings. Prices range from around $100,000 to $300,000-plus. The community’s CAP Index Crime Score of 2-out-of-10 is below the national average. Residents can expect hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Tornadoes are possible in this area of the country.

Rip's Tavern is known for its fried chicken
A handful of popular dining and drinking destinations can be found along Main Street, including Rip’s Tavern, famous for its fried chicken. “Rip’s chicken is HUGE,” says Beazely of the landmark open since 1936. “Go to any state, and I swear to God, people know it.”
The bank, library and American Legion post are also located along this commercial stretch. Big-box retailers offer one-stop shopping in nearby communities. “There are a lot of amenities being this close to La Salle/Peru,” Beazely says.

Community school also celebrates veterans
Younger students can attend Ladd Community Consolidated School District #94, which consists solely of Ladd Community Consolidated School, a PK-8 institution rated B-minus by Niche. “The school has a large celebration for Veterans Day,” Beazely says, “and they have other events where they treat the veterans to coffee and donuts.” Older students can attend Hall High School District #502 in nearby Spring Valley, whose lone school is B-rated. Bureau County allows eligible students to transfer within a district. Students can apply for out-of-district transfers, but under school board policy, parents are liable for the full cost of such a move, including tuition in the receiving district. This makes such transfers extremely rare.
Ladd Community Consolidated School has 191 students with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1.
Hall High School has 410 students and earns an overall B grade according to Niche.
