Known as Lafayette’s first subdivision, Highland Park boasts well-preserved historic homes and a tight-knit community within walking distance of downtown. The neighborhood is on the National Register of Historic Places, and people here know the history of their homes, many of which date back to the 19th century. Highland Park homes have character
Though most Highland Park homes were built around the 1890s, each have unique character details that set them apart from one another. “We bought a Georgian Colonial home and completely redid the inside of it,” says Kari Schrader, a Highland Park resident and broker with FC Tucker Real Estate. Buyers here take great pains to preserve unique architectural details while refreshing the interior: “You still have that character and charm, but it still feels new.” Streets here are uniquely curved to showcase multiple angles of these well-preserved homes, which include stately Colonial Revivals, cozy bungalows and whimsical Queen Annes and Tudor Revivals. Residents here keep tidy lawns and install decks, pools and play equipment in their fenced backyards. Schrader says the market here is competitive, thought there are many entry points: “You have houses in there that could be in 300,000s on up to a million, so you don’t have this cookie cutter neighborhood.” Most single-family builds sell between $300,000 and $500,000, while the neighborhood’s limited condos sell between $100,000 and $200,000.

Walking distance to Lafayette Country Club
The neighborhood’s namesake park, which locals call “The Triangle,” is a central feature of the neighborhood, a pocket of green flanked by a historic brick street and some of Highland Park’s largest homes. It’s a place for kids to run and ride bikes around, and where neighbors convene each Friday to watch Jerry on the Triangle play music for the community. Residents can also recreate at the Lafayette Country Club, a membership-based organization with a golf club, a pool and tennis courts. In the summer, Schrader says kids walk over to the club to swim or participate in the junior golf club. Opened in 1909, the club has engaged generations of Highland Park residents.
People move here for Central Catholic schools
Students here can start at Miller Elementary next to the neighborhood, then continue on to Sunnyside International and Tecumseh Junior High. All three schools have a B-minus from Niche. Teens at Jefferson High can get ahead on college credits through the school’s dual enrollment programs with Purdue University and Ivy Tech Community College. Many people move to the neighborhood for proximity to Central Catholic schools, which have an A rating. “It’s really appealing to people who have their kids in that school system,” Schrader says. “That’s why we moved into the neighborhood originally.”

Saturdays at the Lafayette Farmer's Market
A large part of the allure here is the neighborhood’s proximity to downtown events and attractions. “My husband and I have a little golf cart, being so close to the country club, and we take it down every Saturday morning to the farmers market,” Schrader says. The long-running Lafayette Farmer’s Market runs between May and October downtown. “A lot of people will walk down to the farmers market.” The Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds also neighbor Highland Park. Though residents can hear sounds from the fair, proximity to the week-long festivities are more of a fun convenience than a bother.
