Quiet, established neighborhood in south Lafayette
Sherwood is a more established suburb on Lafayette's newer south side. With well-kept homes on larger lots, this neighborhood benefits from a quiet location about 3.8 miles south of downtown Lafayette. "I think what makes it unique is the neighbors — they're not noisy or loud, they're respectful," says Elvy Sanchez, a Sherwood resident and owner of Fresh Cleaning, which operates around Lafayette and West Lafayette. This neighborhood is close to one of the south side's largest parks, offering another quiet retreat. Yet there are also opportunities for neighborly connections, with a nearby church and a restaurant known for remembering regulars. The neighborhood is also within reach of the bustling shopping and dining hub of Veterans Memorial Parkway to the south.
Midcentury ranches and New Traditionals
This neighborhood is mostly made up of single-family homes, varying in style and age. Most of these are from the '50s through the '70s, including midcentury ranches and bi-levels. Some of these still have interior features of the period like hardwood floors and fireplaces. There are also homes as new as the '90s and '00s in the New Traditional style. Generally, properties have neatly mowed front yards large enough to place a swinging bench. Lot sizes average around a quarter of an acre, but lots are as large as half an acre in the southwest corner. Prices can range from $150,000 to $250,000. Properties on the north side of the neighborhood may experience some noise from Norfolk Southern trains.
Friendly service at Walt's Other Pub
Shopping and dining areas are just outside the neighborhood to the north and south. To the north, Walt's Other Pub is a south-side draw for a "Cheers"-like familiarity. Here, servers know their regulars' names and orders by heart. "We see the same people every day, and there are a lot of people with a standing reservation," says Jamie Bogan, General Manager at Walt's. Chicken wings with a signature teriyaki sauce are a Walt's favorite. A mile south, Veterans Memorial Parkway is a shopping and dining area with lots of chain and local options. Walmart is a go-to for groceries. Locals also love La Plaza for specialty Mexican groceries and tacos with soft corn tortillas, cilantro and onion. "That whole area has so many places to choose from when we want to go out to eat on weekends," Sanchez says.
New playground and sports facilities at Armstrong
One of this area's largest parks is just a mile north. Armstrong Park is a south-side attraction spanning 30 acres with updated amenities. Kids can play on the new multi-age playground that came up in 2023. At the same time, many of the sports facilities received upgrades including new surfacing for the tennis and basketball courts and new seeding on the three baseball fields. While crowds can get rowdy at youth baseball games, the park also offers some quiet spaces. Paved paths wrap around grassy areas and a fishing pond with a fountain feature.
Emphasis on the arts at Jefferson High
Sherwood is part of the outer reaches of the Lafayette School Corporation, with access to a full pipeline of K-12 schools. Students may enter kindergarten at Amelia Earhart Elementary, which is within walking distance to the west. It receives a B from Niche and also offers Future Flyers Preschool for kids aged 3 and up. The Lafayette school pipeline includes Sunnyside Intermediate for fifth and sixth grade and Tecumseh Junior High for seventh and eighth, both earning a B-minus. Jefferson High School earns an B-plus. Throughout their K-12 years, students may participate in beginner, intermediate and advanced dance classes at Jefferson High.
Fine art for sale at Art in the Park
Lafayette hosts annual events with picturesque green spaces as the backdrop. Armstrong has hosted the annual Art in the Park festival, spanning various parks throughout June and July with different themes like "Dance Night," "Decades Night," "Dog Days of Summer" and "End of Summer Bash." Local and regional fine arts are front and center, with watercolor paintings, pottery and other items for sale. Local musicians and a wide food selection add to the festivities. Within Sherwood, Crestview Community Church is another gathering space with casual Sunday worship services featuring contemporary and traditional music.
Linear trail goes to parks, restaurants
This neighborhood is well-connected by foot, bike or car. The Linear Trail is a paved pedestrian path bordering Sherwood's north side. It spans 1.12 miles and leads northwest past Walt's Other Pub and Armstrong Park. Bordering the neighborhood's west side, South 9th Street is a direct route north to Armstrong and Walt's and south to Veterans Memorial Parkway. It continues north toward Downtown Lafayette.
