In the center of Lafayette, Sunnyside is a dynamic neighborhood with a concentration of schools, healthcare facilities, churches and green space, all about 1.5 miles from downtown Lafayette. Here, families can walk to the neighborhood elementary school on weekdays and an urban forest on the weekends. Churches also have a family-focused neighborhood events with free meals for kids and parents. Sunnyside has diverse offerings catering to all ages, from K-12 schools to adult education centers, from pediatric offices to senior living centers. All of this is close to Lafayette's thriving downtown area.

After-school programming at Murdock Elementary
The neighborhood is home to the Lafayette School Corporation headquarters, and two of its entities. On the west side of the neighborhood is Murdock, one of eight elementary schools in the district, earning a B from Niche. Murdock hosts FOCUS, an after-school program providing enrichment like field trips and family dinners for kids and parents. Sunnyside Intermediate is next door, earning a B-minus and serving the district's fifth and sixth graders. For seventh and eighth grade, kids attend Tecumseh Junior High, earning a B-minus, while teens attend Jefferson High, earning an A-minus. The Excel Center provides a variety of adult education opportunities such as industry certifications. It offers additional support for English language learners such as small group English remediation classes.

Decorative 20th-century cottages
Apartments and small single-family homes are spread throughout the neighborhood. There are early 20th-century bungalows and cottages as well as midcentury ranch-style homes. These older properties vary in design with decorative elements such as arched doorways, stonework and chimneys. Well-kept lawns help add to the curb appeal. Some homes are set back from the street with winding pathways leading to front doors. This area is generally lacking in sidewalks, but homes on North 27th Street do get lots of shade from mature trees. Fixer-uppers can start around $150,000 while renovated properties can go for up to $275,000.

Wooded trails at Murdock Park
Sunnyside has its own urban forest. Just south of the elementary school, Murdock Park spans 39 acres of woodland. An interpretive trail loops around the park, spotlighting over 40 tree varieties. Murdock is a wintertime destination, with sled rentals and hot chocolate on top of the hill. The park also features an 18-hole disc golf course. Columbian Park, a Lafayette centerpiece, is less than half a mile south. This park has several kid-friendly attractions including a zoo with a $3 entrance fee and a water park.

Locals dig the burgers at Digby's
Downtown Lafayette is a revitalized area with unique local restaurants and boutiques. "Ten years ago there was nothing, but now it's very much a buzzing area with lots of restaurants," says Stephen Leitch, a broker with Coldwell Banker Shook. Digby's Pub and Patio serves casual bites like build-your-own burgers. The restaurant comes to life during events like trivia, open mic nights and live music performances. Some restaurants are even closer to home. Sherwood has several Mexican eateries such as Mama Ines, a local favorite bakery with savory and sweet bites like tamales and tres leches. Mi Ranchito Supermarket has fresh produce and Mexican groceries.

Grace United Methodist offers a free meal and fun
Churches anchor this community with family-friendly events. Grace United Methodist brings in Sunnyside residents with Fall into Grace, an autumn festival with carnival games and a free meal. "People can bring their family, eat and not have to cook a meal," says Cindy Butler, church administrator. "Our members are conscious of that kinds of thing." Downtown Lafayette hosts events such as Mosey Down Main, with local vendors lining the street. "You can wander up and down, meet people, have some food and listen to music," Leitch says.
Ferry Street goes downtown
Downtown Lafayette is 1.5 miles west. Bordering the neighborhood's south side, Ferry Street is a downtown route via car. There aren't any bike lanes leading west, but Ferry Street does have sidewalks on both sides. The number 7 bus also departs from Ferry Street. Healthcare is easy to access from Sunnyside, home to dentists, primary care doctors and pediatricians.
