Apartments and small single-family homes are spread throughout the neighborhood. There are early 20th-century bungalows and cottages as well as midcentury ranch-style homes. These older properties vary in design with decorative elements such as arched doorways, stonework and chimneys. Well-kept lawns help add to the curb appeal. Some homes are set back from the street with winding pathways leading to front doors. This area is generally lacking in sidewalks, but homes on North 27th Street do get lots of shade from mature trees. Locals dig the burgers at Digby's

Downtown Lafayette is a revitalized area with unique local restaurants and boutiques. "Ten years ago there was nothing, but now it's very much a buzzing area with lots of restaurants," says Stephen Leitch, a broker with Coldwell Banker Shook. Digby's Pub and Patio serves casual bites like build-your-own burgers. The restaurant comes to life during events like trivia, open mic nights and live music performances. Some restaurants are even closer to home. Sherwood has several Mexican eateries such as Mama Ines, a local favorite bakery with savory and sweet bites like tamales and tres leches. Mi Ranchito Supermarket has fresh produce and Mexican groceries.

Grace United Methodist offers a free meal and fun

Churches anchor this community with family-friendly events. Grace United Methodist brings in Sunnyside residents with Fall into Grace, an autumn festival with carnival games and a free meal. "People can bring their family, eat and not have to cook a meal," says Cindy Butler, church administrator. "Our members are conscious of that kinds of thing." Downtown Lafayette hosts events such as Mosey Down Main, with local vendors lining the street. "You can wander up and down, meet people, have some food and listen to music," Leitch says.

Ferry Street goes downtown

Downtown Lafayette is 1.5 miles west. Bordering the neighborhood's south side, Ferry Street is a downtown route via car. There aren't any bike lanes leading west, but Ferry Street does have sidewalks on both sides. The number 7 bus also departs from Ferry Street. Healthcare is easy to access from Sunnyside, home to dentists, primary care doctors and pediatricians.
