Broadmoor
Suburban Neighborhood in Lafayette, Louisiana
Lafayette Parish 70503
Ranch-style homes by the river
Most homes in Broadmoor date to the 1960s, ’70s or ’80s, as evidenced by the plethora of single-story ranch-style houses in the mix. There are some Colonial Revival-style houses and new builds blended in, particularly in the gated subdivisions along the river. Tree-lined streets and cul-de-sacs with paved sidewalks contribute to the sheltered vibe of the neighborhood, and most properties include driveways to keep parked cars from clogging up traffic. Modest ranch-style homes start at around $250,000, while four-bedroom custom builds on the riverfront are priced in the $800,000 range.Batter up at Broadmoor Park
Broadmoor Park hosts home games for the Lafayette Little League Chargers from the baseball diamond beside the elementary school. Thomas Park is centrally located along Geraldine Drive and features lighted tennis courts, a jogging path, sports fields and a playground. It’s also the home of Thomas Recreation Center, which offers classes in aerobics, gymnastics, fencing and various dance styles. Down the street from Thomas Park, residents cool off at the pool at Riverside Swim Club. The club is a pillar of the community, taking an active role in local charity events, initiatives and outreach programs.Revving up at Broadmoor Elementary School
Students start their school days at Broadmoor Elementary School before moving on to Edgar Martin Middle School. Both schools are right in the neighborhood and within walking distance of most homes east of Thomas Park. Lafayette High School, a Louisiana Distinguished School, is a few blocks away on the other side of Route 167. Niche gives each of these schools an A-minus. Residents also have the opportunity to procure an undergraduate degree from Remington College Lafayette, located on Ambassador Caffrey Parkway.Rhythms on the River
On Thursdays in spring and fall, Rhythms on the River brings outdoor concerts to the Vermilion at nearby River Ranch Town Square. The events are free and open to the public. Local food vendors such as Reggie’s Soulfood, The Churros Boutique and Cajun Hot Tamales and Hot Dogs are onsite to spice up the events. “Pretty much everybody from all over the place comes into River Ranch for that,” says Breaux, who grew up in Broadmoor.Driving to downtown Lafayette
Route 167 borders the northwestern edge of Broadmoor, providing the quickest route to downtown Lafayette and the Vermilionville Historic Village. The drive takes about 20 minutes. There are numerous bus stops along Ambassador Caffery Boulevard and a few along Broadmoor Boulevard, served by the Lafayette Transit System. Louisiana’s capital city, Baton Rouge, is about 90 minutes away, making it a good destination for a weekend getaway.Ambling along Ambassador Row
Ambassador Caffrey Parkway runs along the southwestern edge of Broadmoor and serves as its primary shopping and dining destination. Two shopping malls, The Courtyards and Ambassador Row, feature chain retailers and restaurants like Big Lots, Joann Fabric and Crafts, Subway and Chuck E. Cheese. Groceries are available at World Market in the Courtyards and Super 1 Foods down the road. On the other side of the neighborhood, Little Veron’s butcher shop offers daily specials on its fresh meat products.
