Lafayette is one of the oldest cities in Louisiana, so it’s no surprise that so many of its neighborhoods contain historic homes, even if the town only has two designated historic areas. Mills Addition is not officially recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, but it was one of the first platted neighborhoods in Lafayette. Fightingville is a particularly distinctive part of the neighborhood with antique shops, a skatepark and its own grocery store. Adjacent to downtown, you can walk to restaurants and boutiques while enjoying the vintage aesthetic surrounding you. And should you need to travel outside Mills, as the area is known today, Highway 90 will carry you through the city to Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Living in the neighborhood allows you to step back in time. Homes from the 1920s through the late 1950s fill the area with nostalgic charm. Strolling along through the streets offers you views of mature trees and beautiful landscaping alongside turn-of-the-century cottages and a wonderful collection of Craftsman houses. Of course, it wouldn’t be Cajun Country without having Acadian-style residences represented as well. All of these tend to have large porches for sitting and chatting with neighbors and family. Prices range from $68,000 for a two-bedroom, one-bath cottage needing some renovations to $340,000 for a four-bedroom, three-bathroom Acadian.

Students in Mills have some of the best schools in Lafayette to choose from. S.J. Montgomery Elementary is a diverse learning community with a 1-to-1 technology program. Each student receives Chromebooks to help them do research and coursework. Paul Breaux Middle features a program for gifted students as well as immersion courses for French and Spanish. Lafayette High School has been named a Louisiana Distinguished School and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. One of the largest high schools in the state, it’s known for exceptional math and science courses, honors and AP classes and a dual enrollment program.

The Mills neighborhood has numerous amenities. From art galleries to vape shops, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. If you find yourself wanting to host a large event without the massive cleanup, the Downtown Convention Center specializes in community events and parties. The multipurpose venue has state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment, two levels, an exhibition area and banquet and meeting facilities. Close to Interstates 10 and 49, the center can accommodate 4,000 people in the theatre and up to 2,000 in the main hall.

Just across the street, Revived Designs Antiques Store and Fine Art Restoration welcomes guests into its distinctive green building. Open five days a week, the lovingly cared-for store contains jewelry, vintage glassware, antique furniture and various artworks. In fact, the shop evaluates and restores art in addition to furniture.

Cajun Country is well known for its delicious dishes, and diners in Lafayette have the advantage of a dedicated bread bakery right in the Mills neighborhood. Evangeline Maid Bakery has been serving the Hub City since 1926. Uniquely Acadian, the brand was founded by the Huval family in 1919 and has remained exclusive to the region. The famous Old Fashioned Loaves are still twisted into their signature shape by hand, and customers have their pick of sliced loaves, hamburger and hot dog buns and po-boy rolls.

The Mills neighborhood is a unique combination of history, community and convenience. Filled with vintage charm, you won’t have to venture far to find everything you need.
