Found just above downtown Lafayette, the Oaklawn neighborhood attracts residents to its namesake park, fantastic medical care facilities and revitalizing atmosphere. The area is undergoing a renaissance thanks to its proximity to both the dining and cultural attractions of downtown and the outer reaches of Lafayette. Realtor Wendy McCombie with Latter and Blum notes that the neighborhood has less traffic than many newer subdivisions, making for less noise and a friendly walking environment. All that’s in addition to the community spirit found here. The neighborhood puts on a Mardi Gras parade each year which showcases the creativity and teamwork of the residents.

Mrs. McCombie is also the proud owner of a fully renovated home in the Oaklawn neighborhood. “Everyone has their own thoughts, but for me, it was the environment surrounding the area that drew me in. Clients today, to a certain degree, are all looking for some peace in the midst of the daily chaos and convenience to their daily routine of life. So, I would say the unique characteristics of its older homes, less time on the road and more time for the simple things in life ...family, friends, biking, strolling and enjoying daily activities and the modern conveniences of the area with less traffic, are all things that could bring newcomers to the neighborhood.”

Living in Oaklawn, you’ll find a large supply of ranch-style houses from the 1960s. These homes have low-pitched roofs and tend to be one story with an open floor plan. However, as with many more established neighborhoods, homeowners are taking the time to remodel the inside of the houses to have more modern interiors. Some of these mid-century beauties are even taken down to the studs to allow for a completely customized refurbishment. Prices range from $250,000 for a three-bedroom, two-bath residence to $575,000 for a ranch-style with five bedrooms and baths.

Students in Oaklawn might attend schools like Westside Elementary, Lafayette Middle and Lafayette High. Westside Elementary is a diverse facility with a well-known French immersion program. Lafayette Middle operates an environmental sciences academy where students learn about Louisiana’s unique ecosystems and their inhabitants through hands-on projects. Lafayette High also has its own specialized academies with one for Health Careers and another for Journalism. One of the largest schools in the state, it's been recognized as one of Louisiana’s Distinguished Schools.

The neighborhood is also home to a seven-acre park called Oaklawn. The open play area has baseball backstops and a playground complete with baby equipment. If you’re in the picnicking mood, there are covered table areas with grills and water fountains as well as plenty of benches to rest on during your visit.

Located just across the street from Ochsner University Hospital and Clinics, Café Habana City proudly stands as Lafayette’s first Cuban restaurant. Voted the best Latin food in Acadiana by The Times of Acadiana, the eatery has been serving Cubano sandwiches, tamales and chicken and rice for over 20 years. It’s family owned and three generations currently work there. Proudly billing themselves as the “House of Mojitos,” you’re sure to find delicious drinks and tantalizing dishes at this local favorite.

Currently revitalizing, the Oaklawn neighborhood welcomes residents with established housing stock, light traffic and a thriving community spirit.
