About Lagrange, GA

About Lagrange, GA

A small West Georgia town with a big ideas

In the center of downtown LaGrange stands a statue of Marquis de Lafayette, the famous Frenchman who led American troops during the Revolutionary War. The Georgia city is named for something Lafayette said in the 1820s, when he said the area resembled his wife’s estate, La Grange. Today, his statue looks over a city of 30,000, where a lively downtown and comparatively affordable suburban neighborhoods pair with access to West Point Lake. But the local culture capital — numerous festivals, concerts and events — helps LaGrange stand out in West Georgia. “We’re a small town with really big ideas,” says Kyndall Cason, membership coordinator at the LaGrange Art Museum. “We’re the main cultural hub for Troup County and surrounding areas.”

Downtown LaGrange is thriving, with old favorites and new blood around Lafayette Square. Solomon’s Department Store has been around since 1932, selling clothing and accessories, while Charlie Joseph’s has been dishing out hot dogs since 1920. But new favorites include C’sons, an upscale steakhouse that opened in 2008. Otherwise, residents head to shopping centers around the outskirts of town, like LaGrange Plaza or the LaGrange Mall, for big box stores and groceries.

The LaGrange Art Museum's exhibits and events

Housed in the historic building that was once the Troup County Jail, the LaGrange Art Museum sits a block off Lafayette Square in the heart of downtown. It often hosts exhibitions featuring local artists and events in the gallery. Aside from the museum, the city’s events center on Lafayette Square, including the Azalea Storytelling Festival each spring. “The Square is beautifully decorated, people are excited to huddle around and listen to stories, and our storytellers take a lot of pride in their performances,” Cason says. “I don’t think anywhere else has an event like ours.” North of downtown is the Sweetland Amphitheater, which has hosted performances by artists including Nelly, Jason Isbell and Old Crow Medicine Show.

While some residents commute to one of the two larger cities, many stay in the LaGrange area to work manufacturing or medical jobs. Transportation within the city is generally car-reliant, although the city is working on alternatives, especially downtown. “With all the new trails the city’s building, Downtown LaGrange is becoming a lot more walkable,” Cason says. Additionally, Troup County provides the Troup Connects system as a publicly available shuttle service for senior citizens and those with disabilities.

Crime rates and severe storms

According to FBI data, LaGrange’s rates for both violent and property crimes were higher than the national and state rates. Both rates have stayed steady over the last five years. LaGrange can experience severe storms, especially in the warmer months. Three tornadoes impacted the city in 2023, including an EF2 twister that caused property damage and injured four people.
