LaGrange blends farmland roots with modern growth
LaGrange, which means "the farm" in French, is a 2-square-mile village among the vast farmlands of Lorain County. While the village’s rural location separates it from big city life, a central intersection keeps locals connected to the rest of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Developing business districts bring new opportunities, and recreational options attract newcomers to the village. New construction accommodates the growing population, yet the village works with its surrounding township to retain the area’s rural atmosphere.
Farm houses can be found on the outskirts of LaGrange, many with expansive land for growing corn crops.

Older neighborhoods meet newly built golf-course subdivisions
In most neighborhoods, large grassy lawns with mature trees follow narrow sidewalks and wide roads. Resurfacing projects are slowly revitalizing older streets. Homes have variety; some properties date back to the 1800s and early 1900s, while others are currently under construction. The Durham Ridge and Grey Hawk subdivisions are the village’s most recent additions, featuring newly built contemporary homes that follow winding golf fairways. Older homes range from farmhouses and ranch styles to Victorian and New Traditional homes. Prices typically fall between $170,000 and $445,000, with a median of roughly $270,000.
The houses along the edge of Grey Hawk Golf Club are situated on tidy lots.

A big community park and green fairways attract people to LaGrange
LaGrange Community Park is the village’s largest green space. It has various athletic fields, from baseball and soccer to a bocce ball court and a full-sized football field. The park also has a large putting green, and several small lakes accommodate fishing. In winter, one lake is reserved for ice skating, with a sledding hill nearby. The community is also home to Grey Hawk Golf Club, a public 18-hole course built around the village’s newest subdivision. “There are a lot of people who have grown up here, and they are at the core of our village, but our wonderful golf course has brought in a lot of new people,” says Mary Kay Gates, longtime resident and village administrator. Other nearby golf courses, like Indian Hollow Lake and Pheasant Run, also attract newcomers. The courses are just beyond the township’s sprawling farmlands.

Trains pass through daily in this car-dependent village
The village’s rural location means residents are car-dependent. State Routes 301 and 303 intersect in the village, connecting drivers to the greater metropolitan area. “You’re only 40 minutes to downtown Cleveland, and you can get to the airport in 20 minutes without hitting a lot of traffic,” Gates says. While some people make the commute, others work nearby in agriculture or for industrial employers like ECI and SpaceBound. A CSX rail line passes through the village, so trains rumble by throughout the day. “It is a busy rail, and we don’t have any silent crossings,” Gates says. “The trains sometimes keep me up at night, but some people hardly pay attention to them.” The nearest hospital is Mercy Health – Allen Memorial Hospital, less than 10 miles away.
New commercial growth joins longtime downtown businesses
The village invites new businesses to join the community. The business park along Opportunity Way and the Commerce Drive industrial park have seen significant growth over the past years. Long-established businesses are inside downtown LaGrange, which surrounds the village’s central roundabout. Restaurants like LaGrange Village Pizza and The Bulldog Pub and Grille serve laid-back American fare. On hot days, locals walk up to the window at Hershey’s Ice Cream n’ More for a soft-serve cone. Another commercial district in the north has an IGA grocery store, a Dollar General and multiple cafés.
LaGrange’s downtown is modest but welcoming, with small businesses nestled among residential blocks.
LaGrange has several industrial and manufacturing areas, helping to employ the local population.

Keystone district schools share consistent ratings
Students attend Keystone Local School District. Kids start at Keystone Elementary before moving to Keystone Middle and Keystone High. All three schools and the district itself have B ratings from Niche. High schoolers can apply to attend Lorain County JVS, a technical school in Oberlin offering programs in agriculture equipment mechanics, carpentry, masonry and other trades.

New annual events bring LaGrange residents together
LaGrange introduced a wide slate of events in 2025. Residents celebrated the village’s 150th anniversary and the township’s 200th anniversary with a large Memorial Day parade. Gates says the village plans to make the celebration an annual tradition. LaGrange Community Park became an event hub, hosting car shows, sports tournaments and summer concerts.
