Living between the lakes in Interlochen
The small village of Interlochen sits next to Green Lake and Duck Lake in Grand Traverse County. Although residents don’t live along the lakefront, a nearby state park offers access to both bodies of water. The village is a bit isolated, but locals still have amenities nearby. “It’s comparable to a small town, but with enough standalone restaurants and grocery stores to provide services for its residents,” says commercial real estate agent Marty Stevenson with Exit Realty Paramount. Additionally, a well-regarded music and arts academy overlooks the lakes, bringing an active creative community to the area.
Interlochen State Park's camping and hiking opportunities
Established in 1917, Interlochen State Park is Michigan’s oldest state park. Trails snake through the woods, offering views of Green and Duck lakes, both of which have boat launches. Swimming is permitted in both lakes, but only Duck Lake has a beach. The campgrounds are popular throughout the year, and during the summer, concerts can be heard from the nearby music school auditorium. Just north of Interlochen, trees border Interlochen Golf Course, creating scenic fall matches on the green.
Studying the arts at Interlochen's schools
Public school students start at Silver Lake Elementary School, which receives a B-minus from Niche. Traverse City West Middle School and Traverse City West Senior High School both receive B-plus ratings. The high school also offers plenty of music programs, including five different bands. Their wind ensemble went to the Michigan Music Conference in 2023. Founded in 1928, the Interlochen Center for the Arts supports art, music and theater students and professionals. “It’s a world-renowned arts academy,” Stevenson says. “It’s like a high school Julliard.” The Interlochen Arts Academy houses students throughout the school year, allowing them to focus on honing their craft. In the summer, the center hosts art camps ranging from one to six weeks. “Several of the high schools have their graduations at the auditorium,” Stevenson says. “It’s outdoors, but it’s covered, and in the background, you have the trees and the lake.”
Interlochen Center for the Arts' concerts
In addition to the services for its students, the Interlochen Center for the Arts also offers plenty of concerts and performances. “All through the school year, there are concerts put on by the students,” Stevenson says. “And in the summer, they’ll do the formerly popular people. People who used to be popular about 40 years ago.” The Interlochen Arts Festival lasts the summer and features performers like James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Earth, Wind and Fire and The Head and The Heart. The Interlochen Farmers Market runs on Sunday mornings from May to October, though it expands to Thursday afternoons from June to August.
Farmhouse and ranch-style homes across Interlochen
Interlochen includes a mix of farmhouse- and ranch-style homes, selling between $150,000 and $425,000. The neighborhood has a private feel, featuring streets without sidewalks and trees shading front yards. CAP Index gives the community an overall crime score of 2, lower than the national average of 4.
Longstanding local restaurants along J. Maddy Parkway
Most of Interlochen’s local businesses and restaurants sit along J. Maddy Parkway, which runs the length of the community. One of these is Hofbrau Steak House and American Grill, which has been in Interlochen for over 100 years. Inside has a log cabin feel with warm wood, but people also like to sit on the patio framed by wildflowers and string lights. Entrees include comfort food like French onion soup and prime rib, and many get large slices of ice cream cake for dessert. Bud’s was originally a Shell and still has the sign hanging on the porch. Today, it serves coffee and baked goods in a farmhouse-like dining room decorated with worn vintage signs. Tom’s Food Markets is Interlochen's only grocery store.
U.S. Route 31 connects Interlochen with Traverse City
J. Maddy Parkway is the main thoroughfare through the community, linking Interlochen residents with the state park and arts academy to the south and U.S. Route 31 to the north. The highway links Interlochen with Traverse City, about 14 miles away. The nearest medical center, Munson Medical Center, is also in the city. When traveling beyond the greater Traverse City area, people can catch flights at Cherry Capital Airport, also in Traverse City.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
