Lots of land in the Chicago suburbs
Less than 50 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and not far from a Metra commuter rail station, living in East Lake Barrington is considered a Chicago suburb, but the larger lots give off a more rural vibe. “It’s not like Barrington Hills where most of the property is on at least five acres,” says Ross Bogue, a real estate agent with nearly ten years of experience with Coldwell Banker Realty. “Plenty of homes are on half-acre to two-acres.” Like most of the Barrington area, people who live on at least five acres tend to have horses.

Outdoor and indoor fun
Freier Farm was a family farm, and it’s now a park, with community events during the year. The village of Lake Barrington was awarded a grant to convert the farm in 2012, and today, there’s a community garden among the 24 acres, a walking path and a sledding hill for winter fun. During the summer, monthly concerts start on the third Thursday of June at 6:30 p.m. at the park’s gazebo. A Barn Stomp happens in September with live music, hayrides, a bonfire and free ice cream. Grassy Lake Forest Preserve has more than 5 miles of gravel and grass trails that offer views of the Fox River and access to the banks of the river. Along the way, hikers are under the shade of mature oak trees. For those who like to break a sweat indoors, Canlan Sportsplex has four basketball courts, eight volleyball courts, a gym and an indoor full-sized turf field.

A brewery that’s also a wedding venue
Since 2003, Wild Onion Brewery & Banquets has been a unique business that makes craft beer. It is also a prime place for a wedding or the site for a wedding reception. It was created to bring an English-style brewpub to the northwest suburbs. The brewery crafts various ales and lagers, and its menu can be enjoyed in the pub or The Great Hall, the banquet facility that overlooks a large lake. That facility can be used as a wedding venue, a rehearsal dinner or a reception spot. Pepper Park Coffee has a caffeine jolt in the form of coffee or tea and breakfast sandwiches, pastries and paninis. Jewel-Osco is on Route 14, west of the neighborhood, for grocery essentials.
