An ocean away from Italy

Named after one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Como, New Jersey, is an ocean away from Italy but retains the charm of a lakeside resort town. Historic homes, a concentration of local restaurants and immediate access to the beachfront amenities of Belmar and Spring Lake attract residents despite the town’s small size. “There’s so much value in that tiny little space,” says Realtor Jenna Cavadas of eXp Realty. “A lot of families come to Lake Como for a short getaway vacation, a second home, or even to live here year-round.”

Life on Jersey Shore

Though Lake Como itself is the focal point of this New Jersey borough, most folks simply opt to fish on, stroll around or admire the lake from their homes. Shark River, however, is home to Shark Inlet Charters and Shark River Yacht Club, a far more popular spot for time out on the water. Residents can also enjoy access to Jersey Shore’s beaches, including the boardwalks at Avon-by-the-Sea and Spring Lake, as well as Belmar Beach’s surfing area. Farther inland, Marucci Memorial Park offers ball fields, a playground and courts for pickleball, tennis and basketball. Behrman Park, next door, is set to undergo revitalization, including a new playground and updated dugouts for local baseball teams.

Competitive housing market, desirable location

Lake Como’s housing stock reflects its Jersey Shore culture. Many were built in the Dutch colonial fashion, while ranch-style homes line most of Lake Como’s residential streets. The prevalence of both colonials and beach bungalows has much to do with the town’s culture. Cavadas says, “We have lots of people that come down and enjoy the area for the summer, and we have people who live here year-round. It’s an older community, so the prices are much higher than what you might find as the average overall in Monmouth County.” Lake Como has a median home price of around $800,000, reflecting its competitive housing market and desirable location. Homes on the water can reach $2 million, while inland properties hover around $700,000.

Hosted every year in Belmar, visitors are granted free admission to peruse various seafood eateries alongside live music and local, artisanal vendors. Spring Lake is home to cultural celebrations like the Irish and Italian Festivals, as well as a Summer Art Walk downtown. While strolling along Morris Street and 3rd Avenue, folks can stop by Thunder Road Books or Driftwood Coastal Coffee House for a taste of Spring Lake’s ambiance.

From mangoes to Mexican to smoked meat and poutine

Matt’s Farm Market & Garden Center in Belmar is a popular independent shop selling an array of fresh produce, from peppers to melons and mangoes. Local restaurants source ingredients from Matt’s for daily specials, illustrating why the market was deemed the “best independent grocery in Jersey.” Nearby, Turnstile Coffee Roasters has window service and outdoor seating with an assortment of breakfast goods. La Sierra Restaurant and Bar offers a festive explosion of color, as well as one of the Jersey Shore’s favorite seafood dishes, oysters. Berg’s Smoked Meat & Poutine serves up popular comfort foods on Main Street, situated near storefronts like Belmar Bike Shop and Hazel Boutique. For a drink, a bite and live music, Salty’s Beach Bar is an ideal watering hole.
