Lake Edge offers commuter access and water recreation

The Lake Edge neighborhood is aptly named for its location along the shores of Lake Elsinore. Proximity to state Route 74 and relatively low housing costs have made it a popular bedroom community. “You’re between San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange County,” says John Metcalf, a broker with Inland Valley Realty who has lived in Lake Elsinore since 1998. “People are willing to make the commute so they can have a trophy home here.” Lake Edge is more than just a bedroom community, however. With the city’s only public boat ramp and long stretches of shoreline, the area also serves the rising number of tourists who visit the lake. “It’s one of the fastest-growing areas in California right now,” Metcalf says. Increased tourism has allowed the city to better maintain the lake and build additional parks, and more improvements are planned.

From manufactured homes to Spanish-style houses

RV parks and campsites cover most of the northwestern edge of Lake Elsinore, but there is a small pocket of mid-to-late 1900s ranch-style homes beside Four Corners. These tend to list between $325,000 and $550,000. Butterfield Village and Lake Park RV also border the lake, with manufactured homes listing from around $50,000 to $225,000 — buyers also pay about $850 to $950 in monthly site fees. Along Grand Avenue, which runs along the lake’s southwestern portion, single-family home developments dot the landscape between the water and the Santa Ana Mountains. Spanish-style residences with grassy front lawns and two-car garages rest along wide, sloping hillside streets and the relatively flat lakeside ones. Houses in this area often sell between $550,000 and $750,000. In the Serena Shores Association, homeowners have private lake access, and they pay about $30 in monthly association fees.

Water skiing, fishing and Zumba classes

Living along Lake Elsinore, the largest natural lake in Southern California, provides many opportunities for water recreation. “There’s no speed limit in the middle, and it’s a pretty nice lake for waterskiing,” Metcalf says. Although there are a few private boat ramps, most people use the ones at Launch Pointe Recreation Destination & RV Park, in the heart of Lake Edge. Fishermen can cast from the beaches along Lakeshore Drive, where they might catch striped bass, bluegill or catfish. Nearby green spaces include Lincoln Street Park and Machado Park, which both have playgrounds and picnic areas. “The city is putting in all sorts of new parks,” Metcalf says. At the Lakeland Village Community Center, about 1 mile from the southern part of the neighborhood, locals can take pottery lessons or take Zumba classes.
In Lake Elsinore’s Lake View District, visitors can enjoy relaxing days fishing from the shoreline, with several designated spots perfect for catching catfish, bass, and bluegill.

Car travel along Route 74 and I-15

Riverside transit buses offer transportation around the city, but most residents rely on cars for travel. State Route 74 crosses through the Santa Ana Mountains, connecting Lake Edge to Orange County cities like San Juan Capistrano, about 30 miles away. The Interstate 15 freeway runs a few miles north, providing a route toward Los Angeles, 70 miles west, and San Diego, which is just under 80 miles. The closest major airport is Ontario International Airport, 35 miles north, and emergency care is available at the Southwest Healthcare Inland Valley Hospital, 11 miles southeast.

Albertsons and a few locally owned restaurants and taverns

Residents who live along Grand Avenue have quick access to Lake Elsinore Market, a long-standing community grocery store with fresh produce and marinated meats. Many people do the bulk of their shopping at “Four Corners” — the intersection of Riverside and Lakeshore drives — where there’s an Albertsons and Stater Bros. Markets. Family-owned restaurants, such as Hunnys Café and El Comal Cocina y Cantina are sprinkled in among the many fast-food spots along Riverside Drive. In the evenings, some people head to the Smog Cutter Lounge for a game of pool or to O'Haras Rock & Roll Tavern, where live music and karaoke nights keep patrons entertained. Downtown Lake Elsinore has additional restaurants, and big-box retail chains and outlet stores are about 2 miles northeast.

Important to know

High temperatures and excess phosphorus in the lake can lead to algae blooms. City officials regularly monitor the lake’s quality and periodically add an algaecide. They have also invested in floating nanobubble barges, which add oxygen to the water. According to Federal Emergency Management Agency flood maps, most Lake Edge homes are in zone X, meaning they are at a minimal risk of flooding, but lenders may require flood insurance. The Inland Empire is also prone to environmental hazards such as wildfires and poor air quality.
