Lake views in Lake Elsinore Hills
From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Lake Elsinore's mineral springs and lake recreation drew swarms of tourists each year. Although tourism dropped off in the late 1900s, the city is regaining popularity and rapidly expanding — and relatively low housing costs are attracting more year-round residents.
The Lake Elsinore Hills neighborhood, which sits across Interstate 15 from the lake itself, was mostly undeveloped before 2000. Now the rolling landscape is increasingly full of curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs, houses and condos. “It’s still growing — a lot of communities are being built,” says Alton Jones, a Realtor with eXp Realty of California, who has lived in the Inland Empire for more than 10 years. “Up in the hills, you can’t walk to the lake, but on a clear day there are beautiful views of the lake.”

Neighborhood parks and Lake Elsinore recreation
Lake Elsinore is a nexus for water sports of all kinds, including windsurfing, jet skiing and canoeing. Jones says it's packed on the weekends. In Lake Elsinore Hills, the 20-plus-acre Rosetta Canyon Sports Park has a large, shaded playground, five ball fields and a dog play area. Also in the neighborhood, Summerhill Park has another covered play area, as well as grassy fields and picnic areas. Near the intersection of California Route 74 and I-15, an LA Fitness branch offers an indoor pool and group exercise classes.

Highway access allows for commutes throughout the Inland Empire
One of the community’s appeals to buyers is its access to major roadways. Route 74 and I-15 provide connections around the Inland Empire. Riverside is about 30 miles north, and Temecula is less than 20 miles southeast. Two airports — Ontario International Airport and San Bernardino International Airport — are within a 40-mile drive. There’s an emergency room at the Southwest Healthcare Inland Valley Medical Center, just over 10 miles from most homes in Lake Elsinore Hills.

Mediterranean-style homes and condos
Most homes in the community were built after 2000, although a handful date back to the 1980s and ‘90s. Architecture styles vary slightly between developments, and Mediterranean-influenced designs with neutral, stucco exteriors are most common. Landscaping often consists of sun-tolerant shrubs, palm trees and decorative rocks.
Lake Elsinore, as a whole, has a lower median price than many Inland Empire cities, including Temecula and Riverside, and this community's median list price is below neighboring Tuscany Hills. Single-family home prices generally fall between $525,000 and $875,000, while condos and townhouses may list from $400,000 to $600,000. Most owners pay additional monthly HOA fees ranging from about $75 to $400.

Chain shopping along I-15 and local dining on Main Street
Commercial developments with big-box stores and chain restaurants line the edges of the freeway and Route 74. Fast-casual restaurants include Raising Cane’s, Palm Thai Cuisine and Maui Hawaii Barbecue. Grocery and retail chains like Costco and Walmart Supercenter are less than 2 miles from most homes, and the Outlets at Lake Elsinore is about a mile farther.
On weekends, Lake Elsinore’s Main Street buzzes with life. This walkable downtown area is home to family owned restaurants, antique shops and the city hall. “They’re rebuilding the city hall and renovating the downtown — I’m really impressed with the work,” Jones says. “Because it’s been a small community, some of the roads are just two lanes. They need to accommodate large RVs and the extra traffic.”

Youth baseball tournaments, city events and other activities
As the city grows, so does the number of activities and events. Rosetta Canyon Sports Park hosts sports competitions, including the Triple Crown Baseball youth tournament and the OnDeck softball jamboree. Sports fans can watch single-A minor league baseball games at Lake Elsinore Diamond Stadium, near the eastern end of the lake. Concerts, wrestling matches and city events also take place at the stadium, and the lake hosts fishing tournaments and boat races.

Environmental considerations
Wildfires are possible throughout most of California, especially during the dry summer and fall months. After heavy rains, the land around Lake Elsinore and along the San Jacinto River tends to flood, but most properties in the Lake Elsinore Hills are above flood levels.
Warm temperatures and high phosphorus levels in Lake Elsinore have led to algae growth and water-quality concerns. The city is investing in solutions to keep the water safe for recreation, such as adding floating nanobubble barges to increase oxygen levels.
Lake Elsinore Hills is a beautiful area, but residents should stay prepared for wildfire risks.
Wildfire precautions in Lake Elsinore Hills include defensible space and emergency readiness plans.
