Lake Elsinore Historic District’s renewed appeal
The city of Lake Elsinore once served as a stagecoach stop along the Butterfield route, which ran from St. Louis to San Francisco. In the late 1800s, travelers began to seek out Lake Elsinore for its restorative mineral waters. Several bathhouses were built, complete with tubs for soaking in the warm sulfur spring water.
By the late 1900s, tourism decreased, and the town’s economy declined. “Recently, the city has been doing a lot of upgrades and improvements,” says Martha Robles, Realtor with Keller Williams Upland, who has lived in the Inland Empire for more than 30 years. “It’s a growing community that’s still well-priced for our area, and it’s much nicer than it was back when I was in high school.”
The Lake Elsinore Historic District has a mix of bungalows from the early 1900s, historic buildings and relatively new homes. Main Street runs through the eastern portion, lined with family-owned restaurants and vintage boutiques. To the south is Lake Elsinore, a long-time hot spot for boating.
Dining along Main Street, big-box stores about a mile away
Jack's BAR-B-Q rests on the shores of the lake, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water and beachside picnic tables. The district’s commercial heart, however, is Main Street, a narrow two-lane road flanked by shade trees and storefronts with colorful awnings. There are locally owned shops and restaurants, including La Unica Barrio Cocina Y Tequila. Robles says La Unica began as a tortilleria and panaderia, but when the original owners passed it down to their son, he reinvented it as a restaurant and cocktail bar. “It’s got a really good vibe — they have a lot of music,” she says. Across the street is Michi Tacos, a newer addition. “Michi Tacos is the bomb for birria tacos and micheladas,” says Robles. National chains, including Costco and several grocery stores, are near Interstate 15, about 1 mile north of the community, and the Outlets at Lake Elsinore are closer to 3 miles away.

Everything from early-1900s bungalows to manufactured homes
The Lake Elsinore Historic District is the oldest part of the city, but only a few late 1800s structures remain, such as the Crescent Bath House and the Santa Fe Depot, both along Graham Avenue. Single-family housing options include early 1900s cottages and bungalows; mid-1900s ranch-style homes; and post-2000 custom residences with Mediterranean-influenced architecture. Prices generally fall between $300,000 and $800,000.
Condo units in the Lakeshore Vista development have sold between $450,000 and $530,000 — owners pay additional monthly HOA fees of around $330. The neighborhood also has a few manufactured homes, which can range from about $100,000 to $500,000. Some manufactured home parks charge nearly $800 in monthly site fees.

There are several city parks within a short walk from homes in the historic district. Just up from Lake Elsinore is the 7-acre Swick-Matich Park, where Little Leaguers hone their skills. At Yarborough Park, kids can climb the treehouse play structure or cool off at the splash pad. Elm Grove Beach has shaded picnic tables right along the lake’s edge, as well as swimming and fishing access. Boating on Lake Elsinore is also very popular, but the city's only public boat ramp is at Launch Pointe, on the west side of the lake.

Interstate 15 travel for commuters and other logistics
The majority of residents travel by car, and nearby access to Interstate 15 allows for travel toward other Inland Empire cities, including Corona and Riverside, about 25 miles and 30 miles, respectively. Riverside Transit buses also provide transportation around the city of Lake Elsinore. The San Bernardino International Airport and the Ontario International Airport are around 30 to 40 miles away. Emergency care is available at the Southwest Healthcare Inland Valley Medical Center, less than 10 miles from the neighborhood.
Environmental considerations for lakeside living
Throughout most of California, the threat of wildfires is a concern, especially during late summer and early fall. Lake Elsinore is also prone to flooding, but most homes in the historic district are elevated above the flood zone. Though the lake is popular for recreation, high phosphorus levels and warm temperatures have led to algae blooms and water quality concerns. “I was just at a mayor’s breakfast, and they talked about how they’re pouring a bunch of money into cleaning the lake for everybody to enjoy,” Robles says. One step has been to add floating nanobubble barges, which increase oxygen levels.
