Lake Lure recovery brings hope after Hurricane Helene
It won't be long before Lake Lure makes its comeback. The Rutherford County community was one of the hardest hit areas during Hurricane Helene in 2024. "About 60% of people would come here for Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, and both of those are closed and being repaired, so there isn't much bringing buyers here," says Realtor David Caulder with Caulder Realty and Land Co. Even though many areas are still closed, some restaurants and trails are waiting for visitors to come. However, Lake Lure is steadily being restored, and Caulder hopes it'll open in 2026. "Once the lake comes back online, it's going to be bigger and better; the sewer and water systems are being repaired, so there's a lot of hope for the future," Caulder says. "The area is just so beautiful and means so much to so many people. It's just going through a tough time right now.
Home sales are slow but scenic properties still draw interest
Sprawling homes and cozy cabins with views of the foothills, the water and changing leaves are among the attractions of Lake Lure. While plenty of homes are on the market, Caulder notes the difficulty with sales since the hurricane. "Homes would sell within a week, but now I have 13 homes for sale, and they've been sitting on the market for a couple of months," Caulder says. Waterfront cottages and New Traditional or A-frame houses on resorts like Rumbling Bald sell between $600,000 and $800,000 but may even go up to $1 million. For a log cabin or a cedar plank exterior home, most are priced between $250,000 and $550,000. Larger homes with more acreage or scenic views sell between $790,000 and $925,000. There are also lots available for custom home development, selling anywhere from $15,000 to $235,000 depending on the location and amount of acreage. While weather events like Hurricane Helene are rare, buyers may want to ensure their homeowner's insurance has the appropriate coverage.
Lake Lure’s surroundings remain a haven for nature lovers
Lake Lure is settled into the arching mountains and vibrant green valleys of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As of 2025, the picturesque lake is still closed as clean-up efforts to remove sediment and debris are underway. However, the trails, parks and golf courses surrounding the lake are still open for residents and tourists to enjoy. One of the most popular areas is the Dittmer-Watts Nature Trails on the lake's southern end. Also, Pool Creek Park and Lake Lure Green Space are open. On the northern end of the lake, Youngs Mountain is open. These all offer hiking trails with views of the lake, waterfalls, creeks, meadows and the surrounding mountains. Rumbling Bald Golf Courses and Apple Valley Golf Course are also available to book for public tee times.
Several other recreation spaces surround Lake Lure, including South Mountains State Park, Cherokee National Forest, Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Nearly every weekend, residents can explore a different set of trails, mountain peaks and meadows. Residents should check park websites to ensure their selected trail is open and accessible.
