Suburb south of Portland by Oswego Lake

Lake Forest’s streets, lined with mature fir trees, sit around 10 miles south of Portland. “Lake Oswego was originally a camping town when Portland was young, and over time, it became a hotspot off Interstate 5 with some of the highest priced homes on Oswego Lake,” says Darryl Bodle II, a principal broker at Darryl Bodle Real Estate with over two decades of experience. “Lake Forest is an older and more of an original part of Oswego with a suburban feel and the walkability." The neighborhood is part of the Lake Oswego School District, Oregon’s highest-ranked district, earning an A-plus by Niche.

West Waluga Park, private lake access and peacocks

West Waluga Park offers many recreational offerings, including an off-leash dog park and a paved walking path around a pirate ship playground. The park also has outdoor Fit Spot Equipment, including a chest press, leg press and elliptical. East Waluga Park’s 53-acre green space includes two turf baseball fields outfitted with stadium lights, a bike course and a playground. Residents with lake easements can use Oswego Lake for swimming and boating since it is otherwise considered private by city ordinances; in fact, its private status was disputed by the public and then confirmed in 2022. Peacocks are commonly spotted when walking or biking through the neighborhood, particularly around Inverurie Road. “Every now and then, I’ll see a bunch of them,” says Dianne Gregoire, a Lake Forest local for over 25 years and realtor with Oregon First. “Last time I counted, there were 35 of them, but there’s probably 50 or 60. They’re beautiful. However, not everyone loves them. They’re very loud, especially during mating season.”
