The history of Kelsey City
When Harry Seymour Kelsey purchased this South Florida town as a “winter playground,” he hardly expected the Okeechobee hurricane of 1928 to drive out most of its residents. But locals persisted. Restoration efforts included changing the street names from numbers to flowers, plants and trees. “Kelsey City” would henceforth be named “Lake Park,” the first zoned municipality in the state of Florida. Lifelong resident and local Realtor, Jennifer Fredricks, says that “people move here for the beaches and community events.” Located just six miles north of West Palm Beach, Lake Park certainly has great proximity to both.
Ranch-style homes and original Kelsey builds
Beachy ranch-style homes and waterfront condos overlooking Lake Worth Lagoon are common in Lake Park. Hammocks hang between palm trees in this neighborhood, but houses aren’t always surrounded by trees. Properties with shady verandas are painted pastel colors, typically constructed in the 50s. Original Kelsey City builds from the 20s might sell for over $1 million, though standard homes mostly range between $400,000 to $600,000. The occasional fixer-upper typically sells for less than $100,000.
