Lake Saint Louis is an amenities-filled suburban community

Lake Saint Louis is a popular suburb of nearly 19,000 in northwest St. Charles County. Initially developed as a weekend recreational destination in the late 1960s, the planned community was built around two man-made lakes near the intersection of Interstates 64 and 70, about 40 miles west of downtown St. Louis. The community has expanded significantly, and only residents of the earliest neighborhoods have access to the lakes. But the rest enjoy high-value housing and plenty of recreation, shopping, dining and more. “It’s a good suburb with a highly rated school district,” says Logan Strain of Coldwell Banker, who has sold nearly 30 homes in the community. “It’s a great location; you just don’t have access to all the amenities if you are not part of the community association.”

Plenty of options in addition to sought-after lakefront homes

The community has grown to encompass an eclectic mix of housing options in various neighborhood settings. Offerings are a mix of ranch-style, contemporary, new model homes and estates. Some are built closer together, while others offer spacious lots surrounded by mature trees. Lakefront homes are the most sought-after. The rapper Nelly used to own a waterfront home in the community. So did Darain Atkinson. The co-founder of car warranty company U.S. Fidelis built a 40,000-square-foot lakefront mansion before being sent to prison for fraud. “That gives you an idea of the caliber of homes we have here,” Strain says. Other upscale homes have been built around the community’s two golf courses. Despite its pedigree, the community also offers attractively priced homes, including some of its newest. Prices range from the low $300,000s to well over $1 million. Attached villas and townhomes are available in a variety of residential settings, including amenities-filled neighborhoods that are not part of the community association. Heritage of Hawk Ridge is a popular plus golf course community that caters to older residents. “It’s one of the only 55-plus communities in the St. Louis metro area,” Strain says. Established condos can also be found. Prices range from the low $100,000s to the low $500,000s, depending on size and amenities. Homeowners will typically deal with hot summers, cold winters and pleasant temperatures otherwise.

Lake access is limited to the community's earliest neighborhoods

The traditional center of community activity is Lake Saint Louis. Residents who do not have private boat slips can store their vessels at Lake Saint Louis Marina. There’s a boat launch at Windjammer Pointe. Though smaller, Lake Saint Louise is dotted with private boat slips as well. The smaller lake is home to the Lake Saint Louis Community Association and its fishing club. Adjacent amenities include a pool and pickleball courts. “You have to buy a home within the Lake Saint Louis Community Association to get lake rights,” Strain says. “But it’s like vacation every day if you do have access.” Non-lake amenities are plentiful. Lake Forest Country Club’s 18-hole, par-72 course stretches for more than 7,000 yards. The exclusive club offers several levels of membership for full- and part-time residents. It is also a gathering place for social clubs and card games. The community’s parks and recreation department oversees five parks, and a sixth is on the way. Founders Park Sports Complex features several ballfields and multiple playgrounds, and Hawk Ridge Park is home of the all-inclusive Zachary’s Playground and a seasonal splash pad. Boulevard Park’s amenities include an amphitheater. The first phase of The Meadows City Park & Entertainment Center is expected to open in late 2025. When completed, the development’s featured attractions will include an ice rink and a two-story hospitality and sports complex. The National Equestrian Center is another communitywide attraction that provides additional recreation and hosts events at its indoor arena.

Top-rated Wentzville schools in and around the community

The Wentzville R-IV School District earns an A from Niche. Several schools in and around the community are highly rated. Green Tree Elementary and Duello Elementary are community schools rated A-minus by Niche. Liberty High is an A-rated school just outside the community. It offers several programs designed to ease the transition to college and the work force. Lake St. Louis is also home to a campus of Saint Andrews Academy, a private elementary school.

The Meadows is a multi-purpose shopping center and gathering place

The Shoppes at Hawk Ridge is anchored by a Walmart Supercenter and includes several restaurants. A wider variety of restaurants can be found at The Meadows, an outdoor mall anchored by a Von Maur department store. Popular dining destinations include BC’s Kitchen, a rustic gathering spot, and Cugino’s Craft Kitchen, a family-run restaurant that blends comfort food and elevated cuisine. The mall hosts a seasonal Saturday farmers market, and concerts are held around its signature Clocktower Plaza every Thursday from May through September. Both retail centers are conveniently located just off I-64.

Downtown St. Louis and its attractions are about 30 minutes away

Interstate 64 runs through the community, and Interstate 70 runs just north of it. Both make it easy for residents to travel around the region for work and play. I-64 is especially appealing to baseball fans. “You can be downtown to Busch Stadium for a Cardinals game in about 30 minutes,” Strain says. Residents do not have to travel far for medical care as the community is home to an SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital campus.
