Historic South Florida architecture mixes with contemporary builds
Although not a designated historic district, the neighborhood showcases a handful of homes built during Florida’s 1920s housing boom. Some of them maintain original Spanish-style flair like tiled roofs, while others display the classic Florida cottage style. Concrete or cinder block homes were common additions during the 1940s and 1950s, while the newest properties often sport sleek contemporary designs, giving the streets an eclectic feel. “You can have a normal $400,000 or $500,000 house a street away from the $6 million house,” says Jon Faust, a Realtor with Coastline Realty, who has sold homes in the area for nearly two decades. Gleason says the street that separates these housing prices is often the same. “Anything east of Federal is going to be golden. That’s the more desirable side because it’s closer to the water.” While modest and historic homes west of Federal list between $400,000 and $600,000, homes east of Federal fall in the $650,000 to $2 million range. The waterside Bella Vista community, a gated development featuring private docks, features the area’s largest and most decadent estates starting at $3 million.
Local athletes meet at Northwest Park
Northwest Park, which straddles 22nd Avenue North, hosts Little League games and youth baseball tournaments on its lighted fields throughout the year. Sunset Ridge Park caters to tennis and basketball players with multiple courts surrounded by a shaded playground and open field. For golfers, options range from historic to contemporary. Lake Worth Beach Golf Club has served the community since the 1920s, while The Park West Palm was completed nearly a century later in 2023. Bryant Park is one of the city’s most popular destinations, with a paved fitness trail leading past fishing piers and a covered bandshell. Those looking for a quiet escape from the city turn to the hiking trails at Snook Islands Natural Area, while those seeking a bit more excitement can head across Lake Avenue Bridge to the beach. Fishers and sightseers can take advantage of the pier, which stretches 1,000 feet over the ocean.Locals consider downtown Lake Worth Beach a “happening place”
Dixie Highway is lined with local businesses such as Farmer Girl, which serves an American breakfast menu with a Greek twist. Although it’s not a traditional restaurant, Mama Gizzi’s Gourmet Pasta is well-known for its homemade noodles, catering services and hands-on cooking courses. For groceries, there’s a Winn-Dixie to the north or a Publix Super Market to the south, leading diners into the heart of downtown Lake Worth Beach’s dining scene. “Lake Worth’s a happening place, but it’s more for the locals,” Gleason says. “There aren’t any nightclubs, but there are a couple of breweries. Plus, everywhere does Taco Tuesday.” Mathews Brewing Company opened in 2016 as the city’s first brew house and has made a name for itself with live music and a beer garden. Fresh seafood and local drafts are always on the menu at Dave’s Last Resort & Raw Bar, a staple since 1999.
Neighbors compete in the Great American Raft Race
In addition to neighborhood meetups and block parties, local celebrations include citywide events such as a seasonal farmers market, bonfires on the beach and a vibrant holiday parade. The Street Painting Festival, a 30-year tradition, is one of the largest in the nation, Gleason says. “They block off the streets downtown, and hundreds of artists come and do that chalk painting.” Fourth of July is also a big event for the city, with the whole day devoted to the annual Great American Raft Race and Parade. “If you’ve ever seen those downhill mattress races, it’s that kind of energy,” Faust says, noting that spirits are high despite the unpredictable nature of hand-made and hand-powered rafts. “Some of the boats don’t launch. They put them in the water, and they just turn upside down,” he says. “But they still give out trophies at the end.”Lake Worth schools focus on career development
North Grade Elementary, a kindergarten through eighth grade school within walking distance for some students, receives a B-minus from Niche and offers a Spanish Dual Language Program. C-rated Lake Worth Community Middle is an additional option for sixth through eighth graders who wish to enroll in a biomedical sciences program that pairs teens with students from the Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine. Lake Worth Community High, which scores a C-plus on Niche, offers career academy programs for construction, culinary arts, teaching, JROTC and more. Sacred Heart School and St. Juliana School provide faith-based options.
Commuting via Palm Tran and I-95
Palm Tran buses can reach downtown Lake Worth Beach in about 15 minutes and downtown West Palm Beach in half an hour. A new rideshare program, Circuit, debuted in 2024 with eco-friendly electric vehicles and ride rates that start at just $1. Dixie Highway, or U.S. Route 1, and Interstate 95 are the community’s main arteries, connecting drivers with the Palm Beach International Airport about 5 miles north and Interstates 595 and 75 to the south.
