Just 30 miles west of San Antonio, Lakehills, Texas, is a rural community in the high plains of southeastern Bandera County. Surrounded by Cross Mountain and Smoothing Iron Mountain, Lakehills offers slower life outside the big city with only one four-way stop and no traffic lights. There is not a lot of traffic in Lakehills due to the absence of lights and there is only congestion during morning drives to work and evening drives home. Beaches, hiking, and biking in Canyon Park
Canyon Park, Lakehills' natural sanctuary, beckons outdoor enthusiasts. From lakeside beaches for fishing and boating to the Madrone Trail's hiking and mountain biking trails, this expansive natural playground fosters the community's nature-centric lifestyle. Children can sign up to play baseball in the Greater Medina Lake Little League, which also has softball and tee ball. Games are played at different sites, including Bandera Sports Complex. The Lakehills Community Center has events daily for residents of all ages. Lakehills is home to the We Care Wildlife Sanctuary, which rescues, rehabilitates, and provides a safe and permanent home for exotic and domestic animals such as lemurs, monkeys, and horses. The sanctuary offers tours to come and interact with the animals.

Lakehills' housing landscape primarily ranch-style homes with occasional custom style houses. From modest two-bedroom residences starting at $150,000 to sprawling estates priced up to $1,750,000. With mountain views and homes tucked off main roads surrounded by open grass, residents are bound by nature. The median home price in Lakehills is $327,500. "The pricing is affordable for the most part out there because it is slightly farther out. You do have some custom home neighborhoods down in that area. You have a super wide range of properties out there. Almost everything has some land to it," McCall says.

Out of the Way Cafe offers country-style breakfast, while 4 Way Bar and Grill serves burgers, cold beer, and live music. Lake Babes Boutique sells unique handmade clothing for residents. H-E-B, Walmart, and Target are not available for food shopping in Lakehills, options are limited to the local dollar store, the Hill Country Grocery. Some residents shop for delivery from Amazon or Kroger for things that are hard to find in store.

College credit courses through dual enrollment at Bandera High School
Local children can attend Hill Country Elementary School, which has a C-minus Niche rating. Students may continue Bandera Middle School with a B-minus rating; for high school, students can go to Bandera High School, which also has a B-minus and offers a dual enrollment track for students to start taking college courses.
Hill Country Elementary School is located in Pipe Creek, Texas and is part of the Bandera ISD.
US Highway 90 leads to San Antonio
Lakehills is a town where people rely on driving their vehicles to get around. There is no public transportation in the area. People can hop on U.S. Highway 90 and drive just under 44 miles to San Antonio to experience city life, including big box retail stores and malls.
