Jewel Avenue
Midcentury ranches and manufactured homes
The neighborhood’s narrow streets are lined by midcentury ranch-style homes and cottages built on concrete block foundations. Colorfully painted stucco and vinyl exteriors highlight the free rein homeowners have without an HOA. Some houses have even been turned into duplexes. That said, there are two small, manufactured home communities within Jewel Avenue where residents adhere to certain restrictions. Although many rent their residences, the buyers’ market is competitive, with prices lower than the Lakeland average, according to Drew Wilson, local Keller Williams Realtor and Lakeland resident. “There always seems to be a pocket of homes here where any buyer can find a house for a really good price.” The cost has increased slightly in recent years as new construction cropped up. Still, it remains lower than most other Lakeland areas, starting at $168,000 and maxing out around $280,000, more than $60,000 less than the city’s median housing price.George W. Jenkins Senior High
Lakeland is served by Polk County Public Schools, including Sleepy Hill Elementary and Sleepy Hill Middle, both of which earned a C on Niche. Home of the Eagles, George W. Jenkins Senior High scored an A-minus on Niche and offers a robust selection of athletics, including basketball, soccer, volleyball and football varsity teams. “Sports are big in the community,” says local Realtor Cyleste Goodson with Regal Real Estate. “Every Friday night in the fall, people go to the local high school football game. Football’s biggest for the boys, like volleyball is for the girls.” Academic offerings are abundant as well. Students can participate in the dual enrollment program and take courses at Polk State College or Southeastern University. This lets them simultaneously earn credit toward their diploma and undergraduate degree. “The district makes a concerted effort to make sure every student is prepared for what they want to do,” Goodson says. “That doesn’t just mean college. They’ll help students look into technical schools, too.”7th Street Park and Bonnet Springs Park
On the neighborhood’s west side, right by the train tracks, lies 7th Street Park. This grassy green space is typically quiet unless someone is playing soccer. Stretching more than 150 acres, Bonnet Springs Park is Lakeland’s holy grail of recreation. Since its grand opening in 2022, the new addition has been wildly popular. Its calendar is crammed with meet-ups, classes and events. Then there are the amenities, including expansive playgrounds, a treehouse, a nature center, water fountains with dog bowl attachments and much more. The park is also home to the Florida Children’s Museum, where kids can engage with interactive displays and galleries. Its popularity has spurred the city to address the area around the park. “It’s maybe a 10-minute bike ride to downtown from Bonnet Springs Park,” Wilson says. “So, the city is doing a lot around the park to make it a walkable and bikeable area.”Dollar tacos at La Calentana
Memorial Boulevard runs along the south side of the neighborhood. Along this main road are chain and local businesses alike. Just outside the neighborhood sits La Calentana, a locally owned grocery store and restaurant that has served Mexican staples for over 20 years. Their dollar tacos are a neighborhood favorite. Nearby fast-food options like Taco Bell and Burger King are convenient for a quick meal. Residents can restock the fridge nearby at Super Choice Foods or Lakeland Seafood, which sells fresh oysters, blue crabs and more.Memorial Boulevard to I-4
Memorial Boulevard has a ramp onto Interstate 4 about a mile west of Jewel Avenue, making trips to Tampa and long drives to Orlando simple. Kathleen Road offers highway access as well. As for getting around locally, Polk County’s public bus system, Citrus Connection, has various stops on Memorial Boulevard.Crime
The CAP Index Crime Score for Jewel Avenue is eight out of 10. The Lakeland Police Department is making efforts to minimize crime. Interested residents can obtain more information about local law enforcement through the Citizens Police Academy, a 15-week course on Lakeland’s Police Department.
