Playing ball at Fletcher Park
The 113-acre Fletcher Park features a mile-long walking trail around Bonny Lake, as well as a playground with rope climbing areas and ball fields where local Little Leagues play. There are four skateboarding courses at the local Lakeland Skate Park, while about 5 miles north of Lake Bonny, the new 168-acre Bonnett Springs Park offers a nature center and the Hollis Botanical Garden, filled with pink rose bushes and Spanish-inspired architecture. At Lake Hollingsworth, set on the southern tip of the neighborhood, residents can sign up for water-ski competitions and powerboat regattas.Competitive home prices in Lake Bonny
Gengler says people are moving here from Tampa or Orlando for better prices and more variety in properties. “You can live in a rural area closer to the lake or a more urban setting the further you are to downtown,” says Gengler. One to two-story midcentury bungalows are typically priced between $150,000 to $300,000 and feature narrow front walkways that lead to tiny front porches. Ranch-style homes built on quarter-acre lots in the late 1960s through mid-'70s have up to three bedrooms and average $230,000; these homes are set along winding streets dotted with palm trees and live oaks hung with Spanish moss.Annual holiday parades in downtown Lakeland
Folks in Lake Bonny can head to Lakeland’s long-held annual Christmas Parade for pictures with Santa and a firework show over Lake Mirror; colorful floats and local marching bands parade along downtown streets lined with cheering crowds. Every Saturday in the summer, Lakeland’s Downtown Farmers Curb Market includes local vendors selling fresh produce and hand-tufted rugs. Throughout the year, Lakeland Public Library frequently hosts free computer classes and creative writing workshops for the community.
Getting groceries at Grove Park Shopping Center
For groceries, Publix is a 2-mile drive south at Grove Park Shopping Center, which also features a CVS and Bealls Outlet. Locals can curl up for a good read at the locally owned Unbound Bookery or shop for gently used vintage furniture at Dixieland Relics. Chef T’s Garden Grill serves upscale French and Italian cuisine with escargot and creamy chicken piccata, while nearby Cozy Oaks Restaurant whips up pork chop breakfasts with grits and homemade biscuits. Lakeside Village mall, located about 6 miles from the area, includes national retail chains like Bath and Body Works and Famous Footwear, plus a CMX Cinema.Famous for football at Lakeland Senior High
Kids in Lake Bonny can start at Crystal Lake Elementary and continue to Lawton Chiles Middle, both rated A-minus by Niche. The B-plus-rated Lakeland Senior High is known for its highly successful Dreadnaughts football team, which won the state championship in 2023. “A lot of young players from around the state will come here to attend Lakeland High because of the football program,” Gengler says. Students also have the opportunity to take expanded education classes in dancing and filmmaking through the school’s affiliation with the Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.
Getting around on Citris Connection buses
Biking is popular within the community, as are Lakeland’s Citrus Connection city buses, which run along East Main Street and Bartow Road on the neighborhood’s southwestern border. Downtown Lakeland is about a mile drive away, and Tampa is about 35 miles west via Interstate 4. Lakeland Linder International Airport, about 10 miles away, is home to Florida Aerospace Academy and the Aerospace program for Polk State College; residents may hear aircraft noise occasionally, but they can reach out to the airport’s administration office with any concerns. Tampa International Airport is roughly a 45-mile drive away, and Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center is 2 miles northwest.
