Lakeville’s waterfront lifestyle blends charm and recreation
Strung together like beads in a necklace, a chain of five ponds carves out Lakeville’s southeastern portion. The bodies of water attract recreationists and residents to this pocket of Plymouth County, Massachusetts, and add to the town’s natural beauty and rural, small-town charm. Lake life in a relaxed atmosphere draws homebuyers looking for year-round and seasonal residences. “It’s a friendly community and welcoming town,” says resident and Realtor Cindy Brouwer of Cindy Brouwer Real Estate, emphasizing that the lakes are the town’s focal point. “Long Pond and Assawompset Pond are some of the most sought-after bodies of fresh water in Massachusetts, which makes Lakeville the kind of place where people go to get out of the city.”
There are plenty of fishing holes across the Lakeville neighborhood.

Housing ranges from Cape Cods to million-dollar lakefronts
Pockets of residential subdivisions, where homes sit closer together, contrast with the properties that span the more rural areas of Lakeville. The change in scenery and streetscapes within the town results in a varied housing inventory. Homes start around $160,000, mainly for modular homes and fixer-uppers. Traditional New England architecture makes up most of the market, including Cape Cods, cottages and minimalistic ranch-style homes. More modest builds with two- to three-bedroom layouts start around $450,000. Newer construction, usually waterfront, typically takes on Neo-Colonial stylings. “The homes along the pond have been torn down and rebuilt as larger homes or fixed up into year-round homes instead of summer cottages,” Brouwer says. As square footage and acreage increases, so does price, with rambling homes and lakefront properties fetching up to $1.6 million. Condos and townhouses round out the housing inventory in Lakeville.

Assawompset Pond anchors outdoor life and scenic beauty
As the largest natural lake in Massachusetts, Assawompset Pond is a focal point of Lakeville’s landscape. Covering almost 4 square miles, the lake is a hub for outdoor recreation, including kayaking, fishing and birdwatching. The surrounding conservation land includes Long Pond and comprises about 10,000 acres of oak-confer forests, lakes and wooded swamps that can be explored by foot and bike on the many trails snaking through the area. The town also features expansive green spaces like Ted Williams Camp and Freetown-Fall River State Forest, perfect for hiking, biking and winter sports. Golf courses such as Poquoy Brook Golf Club and Lebaron Hills Country Club offer premier greens and other amenities for golfers and members. Seasonal cranberry bog tours add a unique local touch; private and commercial farms are scattered within a 15-mile radius, with many open for public tours.

Freetown-Lakeville Regional School District earns a B-plus
Students are zoned to attend the Freetown-Lakeville Regional School District, which serves about 2,700 students between the two towns and earns a B-plus score from Niche. Kids may start their academic journey at Assawompset Elementary School for kindergarten through third grade before advancing to George R. Austin Intermediate School for fourth and fifth grade. Both receive B overall grades. Sixth- through eighth-graders attend Freetown-Lakeville Middle School and can continue to Apponequet Regional High School. Both earning B-plus scores, the middle and high school each receive strong scores for their teachers, with above average scoring for academics. Home of the Lakers, Apponequet Regional High School offers a strong athletics program, which includes football, basketball and field and ice hockey teams.

Dining at Baldie's Craft Pizzeria, quick bites at Marylou's Coffee
Due to the rural and residential nature of Lakeville, the town only has a few establishments, most of which are clustered around the postal office and a handful of government buildings. Baldie’s Craft Pizzeria and Marylou’s Coffee are two local favorites, while Red Hand Brewing Co invites regional visitors to its brewpub. “People love the brewery for its hatchet throwing, dunk tables and food trucks,” Brouwer says. For more shopping and dining, residents mainly head to neighboring communities like Middleborough, just north, and Taunton, less than 10 miles west. Convenient grocery stores include Hannaford, Shaw’s and Aldi.

Getting around town and taking the train to Boston
Main Street and Bedford Street are two of Lakeville’s main routes, both of which connect to Interstate 495. Route 140 bisects the southern portion of Lakeville and links to Route 24 and Interstate 195. While most residents in town depend on cars, commuters can rely on public transportation. Nearby train stations include the Middleboro/Lakeville and Middleborough stations, with trains that connect to Boston. “The high-speed trail now goes to Bedford and Boston, and we have easy highway access,” Brouwer says. Providence is about 30 miles west, and Boston is 40 miles north — residents can access the cities’ respective airports for regional and international flights.
