Lakewood Estates
Midcentury homes and a few two-story builds
Like most of Lakewood, Lakewood Estates’ housing inventory is composed almost entirely of ranch-style homes built in the 1950s. However, there is a small enclave of larger two-story homes on the north side of the neighborhood off of Allington Street. Most of the ranch-style homes in the neighborhood offer between 1,000 and 1,700 square feet, and many have undergone drastic renovations and updates in the last couple of decades. Ranch-style homes in the neighborhood usually sell for $800,000 to $1 million, while two-story properties go for $1 million to $1.3 million.Served by Long Beach and Bellflower schools
Homes in the northern part of the neighborhood fall into the Bellflower Unified School District, while homes on the south side are part of Long Beach Unified. Southside students can attend Cleveland Elementary, which has an A on Niche, Bancroft Middle School, which has an A-minus, and Lakewood High, which has a B-plus. Students on the north side can go to Esther Lindstrom Elementary, which has a B rating, and Mayfair High School, which has a B-plus and serves grades 7 through 12.Green spaces along the San Gabriel River
There are a few small, well-maintained city parks scattered around the neighborhood, offering playgrounds and athletic fields. But when most locals want to get outside, they’re most likely to head to the green spaces that line the San Gabriel River. The river actually serves as the border between Lakewood and Cerritos, and both towns have parks along the riverbed. Liberty Park in Cerritos is the largest of these, but it’s connected to Mae Boyar Park, Monte Verde Park and Rynerson Park, all of which feature playgrounds, basketball courts and tennis fields. The paved San Gabriel River Trail runs through the parks as well. This 28-mile-long bike runs south to Seal Beach and north all the way to Azusa and the San Gabriel Mountains.Close to both the Cerritos Center and the Lakewood Center
Shopping in Lakewood Estates is concentrated at the intersection of South Street and Woodruff Avenue. The shopping centers at the intersection are home to both a Vons supermarket and a Grocery Outlet, along with a selection of chain retailers. There are also a number of highly rated Mexican and East Asian eateries in the area, including Thai Villa Restaurant and Adobo Taco Grill. Lakewood Estates is also less than a mile from multiple expansive retail centers. “There’s great shopping everywhere you look,” says Nendel. “The hardest part is usually deciding which direction to pick.” To the west, the Lakewood Center is one of the largest malls in California, featuring over 200 shops and restaurants, while the Cerritos Center to the east is home to a similarly sprawling assortment of retail and dining.Close to the I-605
Most homes in the neighborhood are within a 1-mile drive of either the South Street or Del Amo Boulevard on-ramp to Interstate 605, which connects to many of the nearby Gateway Cities. Multiple bus routes run through the neighborhood, offering connections to Cerritos, Long Beach and other Lakewood neighborhoods. It’s a roughly 24-mile drive from the neighborhood to Los Angeles International Airport and about 4 miles to the smaller Long Beach Airport, which offers flights to 27 locations in the U.S.
