Lakewood Park
The Lakewood Center's stores and restaurants
Since 1952, the Lakewood Center has been the area’s largest and most popular retail mecca. It offers over 200 shops and services on the west side of community, including department stores like Macy’s and JCPenney. The mall also has a food court with casual chains, including California Pizza Kitchen and Red Robin. The entertainment options range from Round1 Bowling & Arcade to movies at Starlight Cinemas Lakewood Center. The closest supermarket is Albertsons, just south of the mall, while the Carwood Shopping Center has a Vons, located on the southern edge of the neighborhood.Ranch-style homes in Lakewood Park
With retail on its west side, the rest of Lakewood Park is mostly residential, composed of loose-grid style streets designed to cut down on through traffic. The front yards have enough room for garden beds, often landscaped with boxwood bushes and agave plants, while many of the backyards have patios or pools. Nearly all the neighborhood’s architecture is midcentury ranch-style, which give the neighborhood a cohesive feel. “Lakewood Park has original two- and three-bedroom homes,” Van Leeuwen says. However, some houses are set apart by renovations and additions. Sales prices range from $850,000 to over $1 million.Well-rated public schools, including Gompers Elementary
On Niche, Gompers Elementary School has an A-minus rating. Bancroft Middle School also has an A-minus, while Lakewood High School earns a B-plus. The high school offers four learning pathways to concentrate on specific academic interests, including the Applied Technology Magnet and the Digital Media Arts, and Communication pathway. For higher education, California State University Long Beach is about 5 miles away from the community.San Martin Park and De Valle Park
Central to the neighborhood, San Martin Park is nicknamed “Pumpkin Park” by locals because of its playground, which features a pumpkin carriage straight out of “Cinderella.” The park also has basketball courts and ballfields. In the area’s southside, De Valle Park is best known for an airplane memorial dedicated to Vietnam veterans. It also hosts Lakewood Concerts in the Park, a free summer concert series with music ranging from classic rock to country. “It’s very enjoyable. There’s a huge gathering because people can walk there, bring lawn chairs and have kids play in the park,” Van Leeuwen says. “You can sit back and relax on a summer night.”Events from the Tree Lighting to Lakewood Farmers Market
Just east of the mall, the Civic Center Plaza hosts the annual Tree Lighting in December, with a decorated 24-foot-tree, photo ops with Santa and caroler performances. The Angelo M. Iacoboni Library, located south of Lakewood Center, offers public events as a community resource. The activities include art groups, book clubs and story times. Next to the library, Lakewood Farmers Market has vendors selling fresh produce and crafts every Saturday.Only 10 miles to downtown Long Beach and more logistics
Lakewood Park has access to multiple highways, including Interstate 710 and state Route 91. Via state Route 19, downtown Long Beach is about 10 miles away. Downtown Los Angeles is about 20 miles from the neighborhood via Interstate 710. Public transportation includes the Metro and Long Beach Transit bus systems, which are scattered throughout the area. The closest airport, Long Beach Airport, is only 3 miles away. For a larger selection of flights, Los Angeles International Airport and John Wayne Airport are both about 20 miles away.
