Part shopping district part suburb 8 miles from Denver
Equal parts heritage site, shopping district and capital city suburb, South Alameda combines the conveniences of 21st-century life with carefully preserved elements of the past. Visit an 1860s country schoolhouse and ‘30s-era tractor sheds in Belmar Park. Just a half mile away, the Belmar Shopping District is home to national retailers like Target and Whole Foods, big-box stores that would have thoroughly shocked Lakewood’s 19th-century farming population… “Belmar is equivalent to downtown Lakewood. There’s a courtyard in the center of the retail space, and it’s a very active area. You’ll also find brand new condominiums and three-story townhouses,” says Lisa Nguyen, a Colorado native, Lakewood local and Realtor with RE/MAX. That being said, single-family homes still exist on residential streets to the east, and most of these brick ranch-styles date back to the 1950s. In fact, much of South Alameda (and Lakewood in general) has remained outwardly the same since veterans and their families first put down roots here after World War II. These days, however, there’s a Lululemon less than a mile away.

1950s ranch-styles, condo options and manufactured homes
As is the case in many Lakewood neighborhoods, brick ranch homes are the predominant style in South Alameda. Most of these properties date back to the 1950s, long before owning two (or more) vehicles was a common suburban phenomenon. Lots here are relatively compact, driveways are short and single-car garages are the standard. Single-family home prices hover between $500,000 and $675,000 depending on square footage and condition. Near Belmar, Lakewood’s central shopping district, 3,000-square-foot lofts can sell for upwards of $1 million. In other sections of the neighborhood, smaller condo units go for $300,000 and manufactured homes in the Ridgewood 55-plus start at under $100,000.
Most South Alameda residents live in brick ranch homes on quiet streets.

The Belmar Shopping District and sticky buns beneath a circus tent
One of the neighborhood’s main features is the Belmar shopping district, home to over 80 stores and restaurants, including Target and Whole Foods. Previously known as the Villa Italia Mall, the area was redeveloped and renamed in the early 2000s — according to Nguyen, it’s considered “downtown Lakewood” by most locals. After a day of browsing the racks, head for a bite to eat at Tstreet, where the menu allows diners to “build their own burger.” Or across Wadsworth Boulevard is Lakewood City Commons, home to other large-scale retailers like a King Scoopers grocery store and an Old Navy. Mississippi Avenue to the south, residents will find Brockmeyer’s, a coffee shop that serves up Bavarian-style pretzels and sticky buns underneath a “Big Top” circus tent.

A skating rink, seasonal festivals and Lakewood historical sites
During the holiday season, twinkle lights decorate trees and restaurant patios in the Belmar Shopping District, and residents can lace up their skates and head out on the ice rink. Dancing is encouraged at Music on the Plaza during the summer months, and Belmar Plaza also hosts a regular line-up of street fairs — Nguyen recommends the Italian Festival in September, where residents can sample wine and listen to live music. In February, stop by the (indoor) Valentine’s Bazaar to pick up jewelry, confections, art and fashion made by local vendors. Or, when snow isn’t covering the ground come spring, visit Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park to learn about local history and visit preserved buildings from Denver’s past; on the grounds, find everything from a ‘50s-era hair salon to an early 1900s water tower.
“I like that you can get to the mountains in 10 minutes. There’s also Red Rocks Amphitheater where so many famous musicians have performed,” says Nguyen.

Walking paths, playgrounds and indoor recreation when it snows
Beyond Belmar Park, which boasts over 130 acres' worth of walking trails, horse trails and public art, South Alameda residents can visit the playgrounds at Bonfils-Stanton Park or Ray Ross Park, which is also home to a seasonal splash park. When it’s too cold to swing, slide or explore outdoor walking trails, stop by the indoor pool at the Lakewood Link Recreation Center in nearby Lasley. The facility is also home to a gymnastics center and climbing wall.

RTD public transit, the Denver Ligh Rail and an international airport
South Alameda locals can use Denver’s public transit system (RTD). Buses stop along the neighborhood’s busiest thoroughfares and run throughout Denver and its surrounding suburbs. Or hitch a ride on the city’s light rail. D, E and H lines pass through Alameda Station, and the W line stops at Lakewood-Wadsworth Station. Amtrak’s California Zephyr train passes through Denver on the way from Chicago to California, and the Denver International Airport offers over 200 nonstop destinations.
Medical care is a short drive away for South Alameda residents; less than 5 miles — or about 10 minutes — from the center of the neighborhood is CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, one of six Level I Trauma Centers in all of Colorado.
