Lakewood offers waterfront living in Chautauqua County

Lakewood is a lakeside village 5 miles west of Jamestown, offering both tranquil charm and urban convenience. Nestled along the shore of Chautauqua Lake, the community has historical cottages lined against the picturesque shoreline, with walkable neighborhoods shaded by leafy trees. Residents have direct access to the lake and are minutes away from recreational amenities like public parks, beaches and boat launches, making it a popular retreat for those seeking a relaxed or outdoor lifestyle. The village also has a convenient shopping district for everyday essentials, while its proximity to Jamestown allows locals to take advantage of additional urban amenities like hospitals and cultural venues. “The community has a hometown feel and you can walk to restaurants and have a drink,” says Donna Breen-Fowler, broker at Century 21 Turner Brokers with close to 20 years of experience. “Everything is close by and the scenery is just beautiful. Now you might get behind an Amish buggy, but you aren’t driving anywhere that has four lanes of traffic.”

Lakefront homes with docks and inland lots with acreage

The village is set along the southern shore of Chautauqua Lake, with gently winding streets that follow the natural contours of the landscape. Neighborhoods are often lined with sidewalks and shaded by maples and oaks, creating overhead canopies along the streets. Houses sit on grassy lawns with private driveways, and many waterfront properties offer direct lake access or private docks. The housing stock is very diverse, ranging from early 1900s cottages and classic American Foursquares to Cape Cods and Craftsman bungalows. Multilevel raised-ranches, Colonial Revivals and Victorian homes are also part of the housing mix. “We are not a cookie-cutter neighborhood and there’s not one home that looks alike,” Breen-Fowler says. Lakefront properties usually occupy smaller lots, while homes farther inland are more likely to have larger parcels. Home prices typically fall between $150,000 and $350,000, although fixer-uppers may sell for under $100,000. Larger or renovated waterfront properties can go from $670,000 to just over $1 million. Fowler said even though there may be some houses within flood zones, the community has not had issues with floods.
