West End is “best tucked away area of Lancaster”

West End is a dense and eclectic neighborhood several blocks west of downtown Lancaster. One of West End’s welcome signs is a mural depicting the neighborhood’s recognizable row houses. Another mural shows a boy making a triumphant pose in front of a rising sun. Many here also live within walking distance of a diverse mix of cafes and restaurants, some of which get regular visits from local photographers and other like-minded artists. Additionally, the neighborhood is a few blocks south of Franklin & Marshall College, making West End a draw for some students. “It’s the best tucked away area of Lancaster. It’s quiet, you have mature trees, the F&M campus is beautiful, and there’s a dog park,” says Justine Dennis McPhee, co-leader of the Meier-McPhee Team with Keller Williams Elite. “You’re close to a bunch of restaurants and have easy access to [U.S. Highway] 30. And it’s an easy walk to the Amtrak station.”

Homes are mainly rowhouses from before World War II

Homes here are along roads lined by mature trees and parked cars. While there are a few single-family homes, brick row houses, or townhouses, make up most of the housing here. Many rowhouses show Victorian and Italianate touches, and some single-family homes include American Foursquares. Many homes here were also built before World War II, but have undergone remodelings. “Some are very stately, with high ceilings, beautiful wood stains, bannisters and nice stairways going to the second floor,” says Christine Nolt, an agent with the Nolt and Bailey Team at Lancaster-based Kingsway Realty. Most townhouses run between $150,000 and $390,000, while single-family homes mainly go from $230,000 to $450,000. However, just over half of the neighborhood rents. Apartment buildings include College Hill, which is one of the options for F&M students.

Dining scene has Copper Cup and diverse restaurants

Many here may start their day at the Copper Cup, which is housed in an old bank building and mostly operates as a drive-thru coffee shop. The cafe, however, has some seating, meeting rooms and free Wi-Fi. Copper Cup makes its meals from scratch, and popular drinks include the Copper, a signature latte flavored with honey and cinnamon. The family-owned Valentino’s Cafe serves Italian, while those looking for Dominican food may stop by J & J Mofongo Restaurant. The neighborhood is also close to West Art, an old church that is now an event venue with a coffee bar and spaces for activities like yoga, live music and comedy shows. “It’s got a bunch of different spaces, and they’ve done a fantastic job of bringing in all kinds of neat events,” McPhee says. Several local and corner grocers are nearby, but Whole Foods and Save A Lot are some of the nearest grocery chains.

Parks have art, playgrounds and place for dogs

West End has a few small parks popular among local children and teens. During the summer, many head to Rodney Park to get in the splash pool. The park also has a playground and multi-colored public art fixture called the “Dancing Arches.” Many also meet up for pickup basketball games at Crystal Park, which has a stainless steel and bronze attraction called the “Changing Gears.” Buchanan Park is a tree-shaded green space with benches, statues and a dog park.
