Langley is known for its coastal beauty and vibrant art scene

Langley is a small coastal community on the north bank of the southern portion of Whidbey Island. Long known as The Village by the Sea, the area is a popular vacation destination in warmer months, drawing thousands of visitors from the mainland each year with its gorgeous scenery, quaint downtown and Puget Sound-related activities like whale watching and shellfish hunting. “There’s a good art scene in Langley, some great bars and restaurants and cafes. It’s a nice combination of vibrant and cozy,” says broker Dan Fouts of Windermere Real Estate South Whidbey, who has lived on Whidbey for more than 15 years. “It can get busy during the summer, but it’s never really crowded, and there’s still a lot going on in the offseason, just in the local community.”

Midcentury ranches and luxury homes by the water

Single-family homes make up most of the housing in Langley, though a few condos can be found near town. Home styles range from midcentury ranch-style homes and cottages to custom-built luxury cabins and waterfront homes. Luxury and waterfront homes on the island typically emphasize views of the water and often feature large windows and patios facing the sound. Condos and smaller inland properties usually go for $400,000 to $600,000, while luxury and coastal homes — categories that often overlap — can sell for anywhere from $700,000 to $2 million. Flood risk is an issue for some properties close to the water, which can affect insurance premiums.

Downtown Langley's seafood scene

Downtown Langley is only a few blocks in size, but it’s home to nearly a dozen cafes, pubs and restaurants, including a few popular local landmarks like the Saltwater Fish House and Oyster Bar. As one might expect, the community is known for its seafood — particularly its mussels and oysters. Downtown also offers a selection of quaint local shops like Moonraker Books, as well as a number of art galleries and the single-screen Clyde Theatre, the only movie theater in South Whidbey. Both of the area’s grocery stores are located on state Route 525, South Whidbey’s major thoroughfare. Residents can also pick up produce at the weekly Bayview Farmers Market, held every Saturday. Those looking for additional shopping options typically follow the 525 to Clinton and take the ferry to the mainland.

The Whidbey Island Center for the Arts' busy calendar

Langley hosts a variety of annual events and festivals, most of them centered around the arts or the sound. Throughout the year, the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts puts on events such as the Whidbey Island Film Festival, the Whidbey Island Celtic Festival, the DjangoFest Northwest and a Summer Nights Series featuring music and performances. Other community events include the Mystery Weekend in Langley, a city-wide murder mystery game, and seasonal celebrations like the Lighting of Langley.

Getting around South Whidbey

State Route 525 is Whidbey’s major highway, connecting Langley to other towns like Clinton, Freeland and Coupeville. Island Transit runs buses between towns, but most Langley residents rely on personal transportation to get around. The fastest way from South Whidbey to the mainland is the Clinton-Mukilteo Ferry, about 6 miles south of Langley. The ferry crossing only takes about 20 minutes once cars are loaded, but wait times can vary depending on traffic. It’s a little over 35 miles from Langley to downtown Seattle by car (via the ferry), and just under 50 miles to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
