Langston is rich in history and community
Many Oklahoma towns trace their origins back to the land runs, when settlers raced to stake their claim on unassigned land. The city of Langston was one of the few areas established as a Black settlement during the Land Run of 1889. Today, Langston is home to Oklahoma’s only historically Black university and a community of residents who look after one another. Alberta Mayberry is an active community member who supports fellow Langston residents through local nonprofit organizations and volunteer work. “I came here in 1987 and worked as the library director for the university,” Mayberry says. “I fell in love with the community. We are all in for our town. People get involved, and they take action. We have the Stork’s Nest to support parents, because moms and dads need help sometimes. There are lots of little things like that. I do what I can for students and faculty.”

Langston University was established here in 1897, and Niche gives the school a C-plus. Football, basketball and marching band are among LU’s most popular programs. The women’s basketball team made history in 2025 as the first HBCU team to win the Sooner Athletic Conference season championship. The men’s team had a similar record-setting success in 2024 and were runners-up in the 2025 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship. Young Langston residents attend Coyle Public Schools. Coyle Elementary School gets a C-plus, while Coyle High School earns a B.

Lower home prices and new development
“Most people who move here have a connection to the school, or they move in for family reasons, like to take care of their grandparents,” says Mayberry. “People who aren’t connected that way move in because they want a semi-quiet area and a home that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.” There are manufactured and ranch-style homes closer to the university that range from $100,000 to $237,000. New homes are being built along state Highway 33, closer to Guthrie. Mayberry said she hopes construction will continue to spread east to central Langston to grow the community. The new contemporary Craftsman homes often range between $335,000 and $450,000. Throughout Langston, properties feature large lots with plenty of breathing room between homes.

A park dedicated to honoring local veterans
The Wm Conrad Veterans Memorial Gardens was created as a space to honor and remember military members. Dog tags hang on the chain link fence, and flags for each military branch fly near the entrance. Mayberry helps organize the annual Memorial Day event at the gardens, which includes moments like lowering the flags to half staff, playing taps and reading “A Memorial Day Salute” by Rita Graham. “We mourn the loss of those who didn’t come home, and we thank those who returned for their service,” she says. “We look for anyone who was wounded in battle and Purple Heart recipients to acknowledge them and give them a plaque.” T.G. Green Park is the main park in town, with a softball field, playground and basketball court. The Langston City Fire Station is down the street, and there’s a community garden behind the softball outfield. Lake Langston is a fishing and kayaking destination, but some residents visit to picnic near the water.
