Neighborhood in Lansing, Michigan
Ingham County 48912
The Fairview Area community is centered between the memorable museums in downtown Lansing and the Michigan State University college town vibe of East Lansing. Starter homes surrounded by parks, local eateries and dueling downtowns characterize this Eastside neighborhood. Fairview Area residents can find competitively priced bungalows and two-story homes, many built before the 1940s. There are also a few American Foursquares and other larger homes in the neighborhood. Prices vary depending on the age and level of renovation of homes, though most are between $100,000 and $200,000.
East Kalamazoo Street and East Michigan Avenue head through the neighborhood on their way to downtown Lansing events and game day celebrations in East Lansing. Michigan State University Spartan pride runs deep in the greater Lansing area, so you can expect to see plenty of green and white in Spartan Stadium, your local pub and around the block. “The community around the university isn’t just for college students,” says Leanne Johnson, a Realtor with Weichert, Realtors - Home Towne. “The area is really peaceful and feels like all the neighbors know each other.”
While it’s easy to feel the draw of downtown areas in both directions, Fairview Area residents have their own excellent restaurants and community gathering places. Eastside Fish Fry and Grill is a Food Network-featured destination for everything from a classic fish fry to deep-fried cheesecake. Just down the street, Dagwoods Tavern and Grill has been celebrating Spartan games and pretty much any other day with generously sized burgers, drinks and plenty of neighborhood regulars. For a more lively, late-night experience, head to Mac’s Bar to experience an eclectic mix of both national and local rock-n-roll artists. You won’t find much shopping in Fairview Area, but the neighborhood isn’t far from the Frandor Shopping Mall, home to Kroger Supermarket, World Foods and other national brands.
Comfortable neighborhood parks dot Lansing’s Eastside. Fairview Area’s include Foster Park, with a playground and community garden. Longtime gardeners in the area are happy to help new residents and gardeners in growing their own local vegetables. Regent Park has another community playground that offers just under 5 acres of green space to throw a ball. Nearby Potter Park Zoo offers more excitement for a weekend visit or special event, with over 350 animals, a sensory-friendly program and a commitment to conservation.
Students in the area can attend Eastern High School, home to both a traditional high school program and the Biotechnical Academy, where students explore biotechnical topics through a STEM-based curriculum. Thanks to its central location in the greater Lansing area, Fairview Area is also close to Michigan State University and Lansing Community College.
The Lansing River Trail, which you can access by a trailhead on South Clippert Street, is a paved bicycle path that follows the winding Red Cedar River to the southwest until it curves around and joins the Grand River. The pathway may not be the most direct route to downtown Lansing, but it offers more than 20 miles of biking adventure in the greater Lansing area. East Kalamazoo Street, U.S. Highway 127 and Interstate 496 are more direct routes to downtown Lansing, Michigan State University and many more memorable Mid-Michigan hot spots.
