“Perhaps the greatest strength of Hunter Park is its location,” says Richard Child, a Realtor with NextHome Reality. “It is easy to access job opportunities, restaurants, entertainment, medical care and also education at the main campus of Lansing Community College and Michigan State University.” Despite being surrounded by these ample amenities and popular Mid-Michigan destinations, homes in the residential Hunter Park community are competitively priced and feature a range of architectural styles.
Modest cottages homes and Craftsman bungalows are next to American Foursquares and homes with stately Greek Revival columns. “Hunter Park Neighborhood is one of the most affordable areas in Lansing,” says Child, “Home prices are generally below $100,000.” While prices are low, house and lot sizes tend to be smaller than in other neighborhoods in the greater Lansing area. “The homes range in size from around 600 square feet to 1,400 square feet,” says Child. “Garages, if any, are detached. The lots are extremely small for most of the homes, ranging from 1/8 of an acre to 1/12 of an acre.”
As an Eastside Lansing neighborhood, the East Lansing energy of Spartan home games reaches the area. Thanks to nearby Michigan State University, “only about half the homes are owner-occupied,” says Child, which “makes these homes attractive as student rentals.” Local hot spots, like Art’s Pub, cater to the home team crowd, with pizza and wings served alongside drink specials and, of course, plenty of screens to keep up with the Spartans. Soup Spoon Café encourages a more leisurely meal, from brunch to house-made soup to evening craft beer and appetizers.
Students can attend Eastern High School, which includes a Biotechnical Academy specializing in STEM and biomedical science. Just beside Eastern High School is Lansing Catholic High School, a faith-based institution that assists students in completing community service projects in addition to a range of clubs and activities.
You can’t miss the 14-acre gathering space, also named Hunter Park, which has a public swimming pool, a playground and more than enough space for children to run or for residents to play a pickup soccer game. The pool has a splash pad that’s popular for children to cool off in the summer. Hunter Park is home to a community garden the GardenHouse, a greenhouse that offers space to grow and classes to learn more about community-based agriculture.
“The Allen Park Community Center and Allen Park Farmers’ Market are popular with residents,” says Child. The center not only organizes the farmer’s market and community garden but also offers yoga classes and opens its kitchen for local entrepreneurs with a food business. While there aren’t any supermarkets in the neighborhood, the Eastside Lansing Food Co-op is a grocery store that focuses on fresh produce and locally sourced items.
Just to the south, Potter Park Zoo is a popular regional attraction that’s committed to conservation and education. The Falconers program assists visitors of all ages and abilities experience the zoo in a sensory-friendly way.
Thanks to the community support, college vibe and popular restaurants, Hunter Park fits in well with the Eastside community.
