Established neighborhood east of downtown Laredo
About 3 miles from downtown Laredo and laid out in a grid, Chacon is primarily a residential neighborhood, with a few local shops, an elementary school and St. Joseph Catholic Church centered around Meadow Avenue. Most of the neighborhood is built out, with most homes built in the 60s and 70s, as well as a few plots of land. “Laredo has been pretty consistent in growing,” says Joe Baeza, who has lived in Laredo most of his adult life and is an investigator and public information officer for the city of Laredo. “There’s a lot of places for it.” The southern section of Chacon follows the Rio Grande as it turns south again, so any new buildings will have to be to the east or southeast of the neighborhood. Chacon also has access to Laredo and the events the community puts out. “The border community is very family-oriented,” says Baeza.

National and Spanish-styles fill Chacon
Most of the homes within Chacon are single story, but a few two-story homes dot the landscape. The most common housing style is national and Spanish-style in muted colors, with the occasional brightly colored home, such as a vibrant blue, standing out on the street. Smaller sidewalks line most of Chacon. “You don’t see a lot of people buying the lot cheap to rebuild,” says Baeza. “Housing is pretty affordable.” Home prices begin at around $140,000 and can reach up to $315,000. There are a few multi-family options as well, sometimes consisting of duplexes and other times consisting of individual buildings on one property. These can cost between $139,000 and $300,000. Fences line the edges of properties, most commonly in chain-link, but also in stone. Most homes have a carport or a parking strip, but on-street parking isn’t an uncommon sight.
Security fences and privacy walls are very common in Chacon.

The Sabas Perez Early College helps students achieve associates in engineering, computer science and science, with the Pathways in Technology Early College offering courses in HVAC, CAD and construction management. “Good schools are a big deal and are bragging rights for a lot of neighborhoods,” Baeza says.

Baseball fields, bats and creek trail
While there are no designated parks within the neighborhood, Slaughter Park acts as part of the western border of Chacon. This park’s baseball fields and playground are bordered by a weaving path, about 2 miles long. To the south, the Chacon Bat Park has over 4 miles of trails. At sunset, a colony of bats emerge to feed for the evening. The Chacon Creek Trail follows the creek for almost 7 miles.

Tacos outdoors and outlet mall to the west
While Chacon is mostly residential, along Meadow Avenue are a few auto shops, a jewelry store, a boot store and Ay Carbon Tacos and Hamburguesas. Seating is outside at Ay Carbon, but under a canopy to provide shade against the Texas heat. For groceries, H-E-B is about half a mile north. Along the way to H-E-B, Sweet Loring Frozen Yogurt sells burgers and hotdogs in addition to frozen yogurt and ice cream. The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo, with outlet stores such as Puma and Zales, is 3 miles west.

Celebrating the country's founder with jalapeños
The biggest city event is the Washington's Birthday Celebration. “It’s kind of like, why Laredo? But it’s been that way for as long as we can remember,” says Baeza. “The endcap is the two parades.” The month-long celebration also includes an airshow and a jalapeño festival. “The Jalapeño Festival has gotten bigger every year,” Baeza says.
One bus route and highway parallel to Chacon
El Metro Transit runs one bus route through the neighborhood, on Meadow Avenue, coming through every 30 minutes. To the north, U.S. Highway 83 runs parallel to the neighborhood east to west before it turns south to continue following the Rio Grande.
