North Largo offers suburban living with access to beaches
North Largo sits between Clearwater and St. Petersburg, just across the bay from Tampa, making it a central destination for homeowners looking to experience all the region has to offer. Residents of North Largo typically choose this neighborhood for its access to amenities, its highly rated schools and its quiet sense of community. “It’s more of a typical suburb, very residential,” says Kelly Jamruk, sales associate with Phelps Realty, who has 5 years of experience in the area. “People choose it because of its proximity to the beaches and since it’s a little more affordable, but the tradeoff is that it is harder to get to downtown St. Petersburg if you live there.”
Densely populated streets dominated by ranch-style homes
North Largo is a densely populated area, with homes closely packed together along residential streets. Lot sizes shift from subdivision to subdivision. Ranch-style homes often have spacious green lawns, stucco siding and Spanish tile roofs. Depending on lot size, build year and number of bedrooms, they can cost anywhere from $85,000 to $820,000. “Ranch-style homes are a lot more common than others,” Jamruk says. Communities of townhouses are scattered throughout the region, with prices ranging from $145,000 to $555,000. There are also some New Traditional homes in the area, which range in price from about $900,000 to over $3 million.
Eastside homeowners should take flood risks into consideration, as many communities on that side of town are within the Largo Inlet’s flood zone.
Pinellas County Schools are well rated
Students in North Largo are zoned to attend Pinellas County Schools, a district that earns an overall A-minus rating from Niche. Families can apply for magnet programs, request open enrollment to non-zoned schools or seek out-of-district permits. Magnet placement uses lotteries, while acceptance of other requests is based on capacity. Ponce de Leon Elementary School and Largo Middle both receive B-minus grades. Largo High scores an A-minus. The high school has offered an Exploring Careers and Education in Leadership magnet program since 1993.
Parks, beaches and indoor amenities available nearby
At Eagle Lake Park in the center of the North Largo, residents can explore restored native wetlands while strolling along the miles of boardwalk. The park also has several picnic shelters, a playground, a paved walking trail and a dog park. Other nearby green spaces include McMullen and Sunshine Parks, both tucked into residential subdivisions. “There are lots of parks in the area, and lots of beaches, too,” Jamruk says. “Indian Rocks Beach is the most popular, but you also have Clearwater Beach, Belleair Beach and a few others.” Little League games are hosted at the Largo Sports Complex, and there are tennis courts and pools at the Highland Recreation Complex. Largo Central Park is home to the public library and the 31-acre Nature Preserve, which offers a kayak launch and a butterfly garden.
Grocery stores and big-box retailers within walking distance
There are several grocery stores within walking distance of North Largo homes, including Publix at LaBelle Plaza and Aldi, located off Missouri Avenue. There is also a Walmart Supercenter on Missouri Avenue and a Target on Ulmerton Road. Area restaurants offer a diverse selection. “We’ve got soul food, Mexican food, seafood and fast food all real close by,” says Wayne Knowland, a local resident and fitness instructor at Crunch Fitness Seminole. “And you can always head to Indian Rocks Beach or down to St. Pete.” Popular eateries include The Corner Skillet and Suzi’s Restaurant.
Highways, bus lines and bike trails facilitate commutes
U.S. Highway 19 is among the major commuter lanes for North Largo residents, with the main route heading about 20 miles south to St. Petersburg and the alternate route connecting 5 miles north to Clearwater. Interstate 275 is the most direct route across the bay to Tampa. Public transportation is also widely available. “You have the 66, 34, 59, 18 and 11 bus lines all throughout Largo, along with the Sunrunners, which are express buses that only stop at certain spots,”. “And when the weather is good, you can bike down to St. Pete on the Pinellas Trail in maybe an hour.”
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
