Avenida de Mesilla
Famous Mesilla restaurants are within 2 miles of the neighborhood
The neighborhood is less than 2 miles from the center of Mesilla, famed for trendy restaurants and boutiques in original adobe brick buildings that surround a historic plaza. “There are some really good restaurants down there. We live almost half an hour in the other direction, and my wife and I will over there for coffee and whatnot,” Jones says. “La Posta is world famous,” he says, referring to a Mexican restaurant housed in a former stagecoach stop that dates back to the 1840s. “There’s a nuclear-powered submarine in New Mexico, and they call their galley La Posta [Abajo de Mar] after the restaurant.” Farther north along Avenida de Mesilla, a cluster of neighborhood restaurants includes D. H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro, owned by a French family that has been making wine for six generations. Their signature varietals are paired with dishes like steak bearnaise and Southwest meatloaf, often enjoyed on a patio filled with flowering plants and illuminated by string lights. The Shed Restaurant offers an extensive breakfast menu in a funky interior with abstract art that hangs on orange and purple walls. Walmart Supercenter and FARMesilla—a market with local products and fresh produce—are nearby for groceries.Historic churches and outdoor structures make up Mesilla Plaza
Less than 2 miles from the neighborhood, Mesilla Plaza is the historic, cultural and commercial center of the community. Once a popular stop along the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route, the plaza is home to the Basilica of San Albino, which was established in the 1850s and reconstructed in the early 1900s. A replica of a 1930s bandstand sits at the center of the green space, surrounded by brick streets that lead past stucco, Pueblo Revival storefronts. Smaller green spaces surround the Avenida de Mesilla neighborhood as well. A lush, green field next to a half-size basketball court and a playground makes up El Encanto Park, while College Manor Park offers another children’s play area.Contemporary Pueblo-style homes and seventies slump block builds
The Tierra Verde subdivision, located in southwest Avenida de Mesilla, contains much of the neighborhood’s housing stock. Pueblo Revival homes with thick stucco walls and viga tails constructed around the turn of the last century fetch between $400,000 and $700,000. These builds usually come on roughly a third of an acre of land with paved patios and otherwise landscaped backyards, designed with an outdoor lifestyle in mind. North of Tierra Verde and Interstate 10, an older neighborhood, developed in the 1970s, consists mostly of slump block, ranch-style homes that range from $230,000 to $275,000. These older properties come on sizeable sandy lots—between a quarter and a third of an acre in size—and most feature elements of Spanish Revival architecture, like arched windows and doorways.Career-related courses, clubs and organizations at Las Cruces High
Children in the neighborhood may attend Mesilla Elementary School, which earns a B grade from Niche, before moving on to Zia Middle School, scoring a C-plus. They may conclude their secondary studies at Las Cruces High School, which also receives a B grade. Most elective courses at the school are grouped into pathways, including those dedicated to military science, law, broadcasting and floral design. Upperclassmen may enroll in the Work-Based Learning course, in which they will create a portfolio based on an internship or a job they hold with a local organization. Industry-related clubs and organizations include Future Health Professionals of America (HOSA), formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, and Future Farmers of America.Public transit and local thoroughfares connect to Mesilla and Las Cruces
Interstate 10 and Avenida de Mesilla, also known as New Mexico state Route 28, both bisect the neighborhood. The interstate connects the neighborhood to El Paso in the south, where it crosses the US-Mexico border. Avenida de Mesilla leads south to Old Mesilla and merges with Main Street, which travels to the center of Las Cruces, less than 3 miles to the north. Roadrunner Transit maintains two free routes that pick passengers up in the neighborhood and take them to downtown Las Cruces and the surrounding area. The South Central Regional Transit copper line also stops in the neighborhood before it reaches the Mesilla Valley Intermodal Transit Terminal and northern Las Cruces.
