Las Alturas
Secluded homes with outdoor space
Las Alturas’ ranch-style and Pueblo-style homes are sometimes barely visible over the creosote bushes that line the neighborhood’s quiet streets. These 1970s and ‘80s houses have views of the Organ Mountains and the Mesilla Valley, and they sit far apart on 1-acre lots, adding to the sense of seclusion. With so much outdoor space, houses here often have large back porches or decks, as well as detached garages or workshops, and horseshoe-shaped driveways. “The original homes out here need some love, but there are a lot of new homes going in too,” says Janine Trujillo, an associate broker with Exit Realty Horizons who’s lived in Las Cruces for 51 years. Most homes here are between 1,700 and 3,000 square feet, but homes that are larger, remodeled or recently built cost more; prices range from $270,000 to $590,000. Undeveloped 1-acre lots are also available, ranging from $93,000 to $129,000.The Las Cruces Bulldawgs football rivalry
Local kids can start school at Tombaugh Elementary, which earns a B-plus from Niche, then attend the B-minus-rated Zia Middle. At the A-minus-rated Las Cruces High, students can join over 15 sports teams, including volleyball, bowling and football. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs football team’s rivalry with the Mayfield High Trojans is known throughout the state, and their annual football game draws thousands of alumni, community members and students.New Mexico State University, less than 2 miles away, has over 180 degree programs and is home to the Chili Pepper Institute, the only international organization that studies and documents the world’s chili peppers. The school has other research programs, including the NASA Space Grant Program and the Institute for Energy and Environment.

East of Interstate 25
La Alturas is bordered east by Interstate 25, which leads 6 miles north to Downtown Las Cruces. Just south of the neighborhood, I-25 merges with Interstate 10, which leads 41 miles south to El Paso. With no public transportation or sidewalks here, most residents rely on their cars to get around, but dedicated bike lanes provide an alternative. Memorial Medical Center is 2 miles north. Las Cruces International Airport, a general aviation airport that has commercial flights to Albuquerque, is 14 miles west, and El Paso International Airport is a 47-mile trip.Green Chile Sundaes at Caliche’s Frozen Custard
Residents here are less than 2 miles from restaurants on University Boulevard, including Santorini, which has served Greek dishes like lamb gyros and spanakopita since 2009. According to Rodriguez, “Las Alturas is a skip and a hop from Mesilla Valley Mall,” which is located 3 miles north and has over 70 stores, including Ulta Beauty and Dillard’s. To the mall’s northeast, diners can grab a casual bite at Chilito’s, known for made-from-scratch New Mexican cuisine, then get dessert at Caliche’s Frozen Custard, famous for its Green Chile Sundae. Big-box retailers are just north of the mall, and residents can pick up essentials and groceries at The Home Depot, Target and Albertsons here.Hiking “A” Mountain
Las Alturas is close to some of Las Cruces’ most popular hiking spots. Tortugas Mountain, known locally as “A” Mountain for the A on its west side in honor of the NMSU Aggies, has a 5-mile hiking and mountain biking trail with stunning views of the city. The Dripping Springs Natural Area is another well-known hiking area, with 4 miles of trails through the ruins of a 19th-century resort at the base of the Organ Mountains. Residents can work on their golf swings at the NMSU Golf Course, an 18-hole public course located just to the north. Tucked behind houses on East Winchester Road, Tellbrook Park is a shaded green space where kids can burn off some energy on the playground.
Noche de Luminarias at New Mexico State University
Residents in Las Alturas can head to New Mexico State University for regular events and community festivals. The Noche de Luminarias in December is one of its biggest community events. “They decorate the university with luminarias—bags with candles inside—and they invite the community to go on walks through campus,” Trujillo says. The event also includes kid-friendly activities like cookie decorating and writing letters to Santa. The school’s basketball and football games draw big crowds from the community. There are also regular concerts from touring acts like Luke Combs and Foreigner, as well as the university’s musical ensembles, including the NMSU Philharmonic Orchestra.
