Mountain views near big employers
Located on the southeastern edge of Las Cruces, 6 miles from downtown, Las Alturas has spacious lots in the desert landscape just east of New Mexico State University. “Las Alturas is known primarily for having homes on big, oversized lots,” says Yvonne Rodriguez, a Realtor with Prosper Real Estate who’s sold homes in Las Cruces since 2001. “Most of the area has natural landscaping, and some of the homes have mountain views.” The privacy and natural surroundings—including proximity to popular hiking trails on “A” Mountain—are what attract most residents here. Las Alturas is also close to some of the city’s biggest employers, including New Mexico State University (NMSU) and Memorial Medical Center. Mesilla Valley Mall is 3 miles north, along with big-box retailers, local restaurants and grocery stores.

Secluded homes with outdoor space
Las Alturas’ ranch-style and Pueblo-style homes are sometimes barely visible over the creosote bushes that line the neighborhood’s quiet streets. These 1970s and ‘80s houses have views of the Organ Mountains and the Mesilla Valley, and they sit far apart on 1-acre lots, adding to the sense of seclusion. With so much outdoor space, houses here often have large back porches or decks, as well as detached garages or workshops, and horseshoe-shaped driveways. “The original homes out here need some love, but there are a lot of new homes going in too,” says Janine Trujillo, an associate broker with Exit Realty Horizons who’s lived in Las Cruces for 51 years. Most homes here are between 1,700 and 3,000 square feet, but homes that are larger, remodeled or recently built cost more; prices range from $270,000 to $590,000. Undeveloped 1-acre lots are also available, ranging from $93,000 to $129,000.

Hiking “A” Mountain
Las Alturas is close to some of Las Cruces’ most popular hiking spots. Tortugas Mountain, known locally as “A” Mountain for the A on its west side in honor of the NMSU Aggies, has a 5-mile hiking and mountain biking trail with stunning views of the city. The Dripping Springs Natural Area is another well-known hiking area, with 4 miles of trails through the ruins of a 19th-century resort at the base of the Organ Mountains. Residents can work on their golf swings at the NMSU Golf Course, an 18-hole public course located just to the north. Tucked behind houses on East Winchester Road, Tellbrook Park is a shaded green space where kids can burn off some energy on the playground.

There are also regular concerts from touring acts like Luke Combs and Foreigner, as well as the university’s musical ensembles, including the NMSU Philharmonic Orchestra.
