Dona Ana County 88007
Custom homes with mountain views
Picacho Hills’ custom homes blend Southwestern style, including stucco exteriors, clay-tiled roofs and xeriscaping, with modern touches like floor-to-ceiling windows and attached garages. “Some of the most exquisite architect-designed homes are in this neighborhood,” Rodriguez says. Homes typically range from 1,600 to 5,000 square feet, and while most were built in the 21st century, homes from the 1980s and ‘90s can be found around the Picacho Hills Country Club’s golf course. Most lots are one-third of an acre and feature pools and large patios for enjoying the mountain views; the few homes set on over an acre are some of the neighborhood’s most expensive. Prices typically range from $365,000 to $975,000, depending on home and lot size. The Picacho Mountain, Coronado Ridge and Butterfield Ridge subdivisions have homeowners associations; residents here can expect to pay $42 to $118 in monthly fees that cover landscaping and maintenance costs.Hike Picacho Peak
The Picacho Hills Country Club is in the neighborhood’s center, and residents will need to become members to take full advantage of its par-72 golf course and four tennis courts. The 13,000-acre Picacho Peak Recreation Area just north has over 15 miles of hiking and biking trails, including a 3-mile out-and-back hike to Picacho Peak’s summit. At La Llorona Park, located about 2 miles east, residents can dip their toes in the Rio Grande or wander along the 5-mile La Llorona Trail by the river, and kids can burn off some energy at the playground.Mayfield High’s rivalry
Local kids can start school at Fairacres Elementary, which earns a B from Niche, then attend the B-minus-rated Picacho Middle. At the B-rated Mayfield High, students can join 14 sports teams, including tennis, basketball and football. The Mayfield High Trojans’ rivalry with the Las Cruces Bulldawgs means games between the two high schools are huge community events that can draw thousands of spectators from around the city.Public events at the Picacho Hills Country Club
The Picacho Hills Country Club has regular events that are open to the public. Trivia Night challenges residents to test their knowledge, while during Wine Down Wednesdays, they can relax and enjoy some live, local music. The club's 4th of July Party is a big neighborhood cookout with live music, cornhole and a bounce house for the kids.Tucked away off Picacho Hills Drive
Highway 70, also called West Picacho Avenue, is about a mile south of the neighborhood, and leads 7 miles east to Las Cruces. Interstate 10 is about 5 miles south, and leads about 50 miles south to El Paso. Picacho Hills Drive is the main road in and out of Picacho Hills; most residents here rely on their cars to get around the city, and golf carts to get around the neighborhood. Three Crosses Regional Hospital is 7 miles east, and Las Cruces International Airport, a general aviation airport that has commercial flights to Albuquerque, is about 7 miles southwest. The larger El Paso International Airport is a 56-mile trip.Lunch with a view at Picacho Pub and Patio
Picacho Pub and Patio, the country club’s restaurant, is open to the public, serving salads and sandwiches with views of the golf course and the Organ Mountains. Other area dining options can be found along West Picacho Avenue, including Le Rendez-Vous Café, a French-style café serving pastries, breakfast croissants and sandwiches. Picacho Peak Brewing Company has a rotating list of handcrafted beer served with classic bar food like burgers and nachos. Residents will have to drive the 7 miles into Las Cruces to shop for groceries at Walmart and Albertsons.
