Sonoma Ranch
Southwestern-style custom homes with golf course views
Custom Southwestern-style homes sit among the golf course’s fairways, and most residents can see the course from their back patios. A walk down the neighborhood’s sidewalks reveals xeriscaped front yards and common design elements like clay-tiled roofs and earth-toned stucco exteriors. “A lot of the homes were built in the early 2000s, so they have a lot of high-quality finishes,” Patino says. “You’re going to see vigas, tongue-and-groove ceilings and beautiful stacked stone fireplaces.” Homes here typically have three bedrooms and range from 1,600 to 3,200 square feet; prices range from $335,000 and $679,000, depending on size. Homeowners association fees are just over $100 a year and cover sidewalk and road maintenance. The Boulders at Sonoma Ranch and the Boulders on the Green are both 55-plus gated communities in the neighborhood’s east. The Southwestern-style homes here look similar to those around the golf course, and with two or three bedrooms, range from 1,800 to 2,200 square feet; prices range from $397,000 to $445,000, depending on size. Monthly HOA fees cost between $145 and $170 and cover shared amenities that include a pool and clubhouse.
A gated community in the south has low-rise condos that range from one bedroom in 500 square feet to three bedrooms in 1,500 square feet; prices range from $115,000 to $230,000, depending on size. Monthly HOA fees cost between $108 and $231, covering maintenance for the building, pool and gym.
Dual-credit courses at Doña Ana Community College
Local kids can start school at Desert Hills Elementary, which earns an A-minus from Niche, then attend the B-plus-rated Camino Real Middle. Organ Mountain High earns a B-plus; students here can join over 30 clubs, including the Ping Pong Team, Science Olympiad and Creative Writing Club. High schoolers can also enroll in dual-credit courses at Doña Ana Community College, located just to the north. The unrated Mission Lutheran School is a private option for kids in pre-kindergarten through Grade 5.Play 18 holes at the Sonoma Ranch Golf Course
The public, 18-hole Sonoma Ranch Golf Course sits in the neighborhood’s center, with a driving range, a pro shop and a PGA professional who teaches clinics and private lessons. When residents aren’t walking the fairways, they can often be found walking along the neighborhood’s sidewalks. “It’s very friendly,” Stevenson says, “with a lot of dog walkers and people out walking every morning and greeting each other.” The 34-acre Desert Trails Community Park in the west is another popular place to walk; it has a nearly 3-mile paved path through a desert landscape with views of the city. The 2-acre Sagecrest Park and 3-acre Sam Graft Park are both just outside of the neighborhood and have playgrounds and greenspace for kids to burn off some energy.Upscale dining at The Sunset Grill
The Sunset Grill, located in the neighborhood’s center, is a popular neighborhood hangout with golf course views and upscale American dishes like filet mignon and pistachio pesto salmon. More dining options are to the south, including Caliche’s Frozen Custard, which serves hot dogs and nachos in addition to their famous custard sundaes. On Lohman Avenue, chain restaurants like Olive Garden and Starbucks sit next to big-box retailers like Target and The Home Depot; just south, the Mesilla Valley Mall has even more retail options. Area grocery stores include Sprouts Farmers Market and Albertsons.Easy access to Highway 70
Highway 70 is just over a mile north, leading 3 miles west to Interstate 25 and 6 miles southwest to Downtown Las Cruces; El Paso is a 48-mile drive south on I-25. Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, the neighborhood's main roadway, is traveled by the local Roadrunner bus and lined with a dedicated bike path. Sidewalks make the area pedestrian-friendly. MountainView Regional Medical Center is 3 miles south. Las Cruces International Airport, a general aviation airport that has commercial flights to Albuquerque, is 15 miles west, and El Paso International Airport is a 53-mile trip.Golf tournaments and holiday parades
The Sonoma Ranch Golf Course has regular tournaments, including the Sonoma Open and the Sonoma Showdown, a two-player best ball competition. Residents in the Boulders at Sonoma Ranch and Boulders on the Green communities can participate in regular events like ladies’ luncheons, Friday social hours and holiday parties. Some of the city’s family-friendly events are within 3 miles, including the Fourth of July Electric Light Parade on July 3, where families line Solano Avenue to watch performers and illuminated floats go by.
