Downtown East
Fun at Rafael Rivera Park or Desert Pines Golf
Ten-acre Rafael Rivera Park welcomes sports enthusiasts to lighted baseball, soccer and softball fields. Friends meet at the park for tennis matches, picnics in covered pavilions and playdates at the playground. Sports are also front and center at Chuck Minker Sports Complex, complete with a weight room, racquetball courts and indoor basketball for youth leagues. Fitness classes for members include martial arts, Pilates and yoga. Residents can also enjoy dance, fitness classes, and youth sports at the indoor East Las Vegas Community Center. Elijah Griffin, manager of the Desert Pines Golf Club, about a mile from central Downtown East, says that it’s easy to reach Desert Pines Golf Club by driving just a half-mile or so up North Mojave Road. “It’s a really nice 18-hole course, surrounded with beautiful pine trees, and it’s public so anyone can play.” For a wilder side of the great outdoors, the Clark County Wetlands Park is only an 8-mile drive southeast.Cultural faves for dining, Albertsons for groceries
Downtown East’s food scene reflects the community’s Latino culture, and many eateries are found along Charleston Boulevard. A beach hut-themed interior is part of the charm at El Canelo, known for seafood platters with a Mexican twist. In addition to chain fast-food favorites, Vive Cancun Hamburgers offers a twist on a classic. Duffers Bar and Grill at the Desert Pines Golf Course is a scenic choice. “The Strip is 15 minutes away, and you have a lot of restaurants in town,” says Griffin, “but locals love to come golf here and then hang out at Duffers for lunch or dinner after a round. We always have a weekly or seasonal special, and you don’t have to golf to eat here.” Palm Pizza is a low-key stop-in for picking up dinner, and essentials are stocked at any of the area’s many specialty markets. For larger grocery runs, Albertsons is a mile from the west side of Downtown East. Entertainment seekers can drive 5 miles south on Boulder Highway to Sam’s Town — a relaxed resort casino with bowling, dining and a laser light show.Quick trip to downtown and the Strip
With prime access to Interstate 11, which connects to Interstate 15 in about 4 miles, it’s easy to reach across the Las Vegas Valley in all directions. The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada offers bus stops along East Charleston Boulevard to the south and Stewart Avenue on the north for running errands or commuting to work. The Harry Reid International Airport, about 9 miles south, is within a 20-minute drive. Residents should be aware that Downtown East does earn a CAP Index crime score of 7 out of 10, and Nevada’s greater Las Vegas area has a higher crime rate than the national average of 4.Modest ranch and two-story homes
Recinos says that the late Tony Hsieh, former owner of Zappos and renowned local developer, played an integral part in revitalizing Downtown Las Vegas. His Downtown Project attracted artists and techies to a vibrant, engaging neighborhood. “All the efforts Tony started,” says Recinos, “are ongoing in the Downtown East area, giving buyers the ability to purchase an affordable house in a community they can be proud of. We’re seeing more remodeling — creating good investments in the process.” Downtown East offers a mix of modest single-family and multi-family properties with Mediterranean style. Pastel stucco exteriors, drought-hardy landscaping and palms echo the desert terrain. Some include carports or backyard pools, others have front-yard fencing. Multi-family investment homes lining Stewart and Marlin Avenues range from $470,000 to $570,000. Ranch styles and two-stories, built mostly between the 1940s and 1980s, run between $250,000 and $500,000 depending on renovations and size.B-grade Clark County School District
Public schools are within the Clark County School District, rated a B on Niche. Kids can start at Sunrise Acres Elementary, rated a C, and move on to Roy W. Martin Middle, which gets a B-minus. High schoolers head to Desert Pines, which rates a C-minus. The video production magnet program at Desert Pines has won multiple honors, including a Social Media Reporting Excellence award from PBS NewsHour.Downtown Las Vegas Convention Center and local events
Residents of Downtown East are close to year-round action at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, just steps from the trendy Fremont Street Experience — a lively street where building roofs are all lit up, and street performers entertain crowds. Everything from concerts to festivals to corporate events are hosted in this 120,000-square-foot outdoor space. For down-home fun in the neighborhood, the East Las Vegas Community Center hosts a calendar of seasonal events, including occasionally being the selected location to host a 90-plus banquet honoring resident nonagenarians. Every December, families head to the center’s winter event to meet Santa, and all community events are open to the public.
