Rancho Oakey
Luxury living and midcentury modern vibes
The neighborhood’s spacious single-family homes on large, tree-studded lots have attracted homebuyers for decades. Today, homebuyers are drawn to its diverse and exciting architecture and prime location. “It’s one of the first suburbs developed away from downtown,” Levine says. “Historic here is 1950, and architectural styles reflect that era. We have a lot of midcentury moderns or Palm Springs-style houses. For people who appreciate vintage homes, it’s part of the appeal, along with the location and price. That’s definitely driving people.” Most homes were built in the mid-1950s and ‘60s and range from $450,000 to $5 million. Rancho Oakey also boasts stately colonials, Spanish-style abodes and sprawling lavish estates. Find luxury compounds with acreage, outbuildings and extras like personal music studios in Pinto Palomino, where properties sell in the millions. In the guard-gated Rancho Estates subdivision, newcomers will find five-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot luxury properties with pools for over $1 million. Guard-gated Spanish Oaks appeals with lavish amenities like multiple pools, tennis courts, a clubhouse and tree-lined walkways. Westleigh is one of the more affordable subdivisions, where residents will find ranch-style homes with elegant landscaping and spacious driveways starting around $500,000.And those seeking a one-of-a-kind property that wows, consider the Scotch 80s. This exclusive 120-acre community includes stunning homes built in the 1950s. The mid-century vibe of these ranch estates has appealed to celebrities and business executives, including Jerry Lewis and Howard Hughes. “Scotts 80s is one of the largest subdivisions of custom homes, with half-acre lot minimums, and it’s very exclusive,” says Levine. “It's on the higher end for vintage homes because the average size house there is 3,000 square feet.”
Top-notch education opportunities
Clark County School District serves the area, and local students attend Howard Wasden Elementary, Hyde Park Middle School and Ed W. Clark High School. Howard Wasden, which has a robotics club, earned a C on Niche, and Hyde Park earned a B-minus, ranking as the No. 1 standout middle school in Nevada. Earning an A-minus on Niche, Ed W. Clark is a governor-designated STEM school. It’s been recognized by the Washington Post and U.S. News & World Report as one of the best high schools in the nation for the number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests offered. The high school also offers girls' volleyball, soccer and a chemistry club. College-bound students wanting to stay close to home have several options, including the University of Las Vegas, which sits right in the neighborhood and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, only a 5-mile drive away.Parks, nature preserves and Nevada history
The neighborhood’s two parks give residents of all ages a place to unwind. At Bob Baskins Park, residents have plenty of green space for a picnic, kids can play at the quaint playground and lit tennis courts allow matches to finish under the twinkle of stars. In the neighborhood’s northwestern corner, the popular Springs Preserve has 180 acres of scenery on paved trails, wildlife and exotic exhibits for an escape into nature without leaving the area. At the botanical garden, meet desert dwellers like lizards and scorpions in the animal habitat, and in the spring and fall, enjoy free-floating winged beauties in the butterfly habitat. Here, residents will also find the Nevada State Museum, which tells the stories of Las Vegas’ earliest settlers. The preserve’s playground entices curious kids with giant replicas of wildlife, including a wooly mammoth buried in the sand. “The preserve is where the original springs were that created Las Vegas,” says Levine. “It’s a wonderful project, and the center has lots of programs that go on there.”Tiki drinks, late-night ramen and punk rock
Although one of the neighborhood’s biggest appeals is its proximity to the city’s best dining and shopping on The Strip and Downtown, Rancho Oakey has its own creative culinary scene around Sahara Boulevard. Boathouse at the Palace Station Casino and Hotel serves modern Asian-fusion sushi and seafood. Stop in for half-price happy hour or late-night ramen, perfect for night owls. Start your day or stop for lunch at the Omelet House on Charleston Boulevard. Bring a friend to share a half-pound burger or six-egg omelet. For a night out, head to Frankie’s Tiki Room, a popular neon-lit kitschy bar known for its tropical drinks and funky décor. “Rancho Oakey has tons of mom-and-pop ethnic restaurants,” Levine says. “And Frankie’s Tiki Room is a cool little bar, and it’s the oldest tiki bar in Vegas.”To keep the fun going, head just 2 miles east to The Punk Rock Museum, which welcomes lifelong fans to experience an interactive experience with the world’s most expansive display of clothing, instruments, handwritten lyrics and other relics from the past donated by the bands and musicians who lived it.
Residents can grocery shop at Costco or Walmart or head to Mariana’s to pick up authentic Mexican ingredients for their favorite recipes. Grab deals on designer clothing at Las Vegas North Premium Outlets, just across the freeway from Rancho Oakey. And Meadows Mall sits over the western boundary, a plaza offering big-name department stores, home goods, beauty and clothing. The iconic Arts District is also just over the eastern boundary, where 18 blocks of galleries, murals, theaters and eclectic shops await.
Celebrations yearround
Springs Preserve hosts annual events celebrating Mardi Gras and Earth Day, as well as guided garden tours and a speaker series. And since the Arts District is just over the freeway, residents can quickly get to a variety of events, from art exhibit openings, the annual Chalk Art Festival, Vintage Bike Night and the First Friday Art celebration.Central to it all
U.S. Route 95 and Interstate 15 border the neighborhood, allowing residents to easily reach the rest of the region, including Harry Reid International Airport, a 6-mile drive. “The freeway access is terrific,” says Levine. “You can get to the airport easily and to the university.” The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada provides convenient public transit access with 50 bus routes. Valley Hospital Medical Center and the University Medical Center are within the neighborhood, offering convenient access to healthcare and jobs.
