About Lauderdale Lakes, FL

About Lauderdale Lakes, FL

Tiny city in the heart of Broward County

Once a major snowbird destination in the 1960s, the city of Lauderdale Lakes is now home to a diverse mix of residents. Locally owned restaurants boast authentic Caribbean cuisines, and festivals celebrate vibrant cultures. However, despite its changes, Lauderdale Lakes has retained much of its retro charm, with midcentury-era homes on charming suburban streets. “It’s a beautiful community, and the price point is a little more affordable than in surrounding areas,” says Marie Yolene Pierre, a real estate consultant with Douglas Elliman who has been selling in Broward and Miami-Dade counties for 19 years. Pierre says that Lauderdale Lakes’s price point is attractive to many, especially those looking to buy their first home. “A lot of the two-bedroom, two-bathroom homes in this area are in 55-plus communities, but not in Lauderdale Lakes. So, it’s great for first-time home buyers. They can get a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house with a yard and a two-car garage. And no HOAs!”

These homes, abundant sidewalks, and petite landscaped lawns have maintained their charming retro look over the decades. The median price for single-family homes is about $445,000, lower than nearby areas like Sunrise and Fort Lauderdale. Townhouses are concentrated near the east side in tidy complexes, with a median price of about $360,000. Condos are more prevalent, scattered throughout the city, especially on the west side, ranging from $70,000 for a one-bedroom to $250,000 for a two-bedroom.

Shopping centers throughout the city have grocery stores, services, and a diverse mix of restaurants serving authentic cuisines. Florida Medical Center is the city’s main hospital. It offers a top-rated orthopedics and joint replacement surgery center among its traditional services. Pierre says Lauderdale Lakes is similar to other parts of South Florida in that it’s very convenient. “Everything you need is close by schools, churches, and grocery stores. Sometimes, things can be as close as two minutes. We’re a little spoiled,” she says with a laugh.
