A small town in the Central Valley with a lot of agriculture
Home to about 1,600 people, the rural town of Le Grand is surrounded by almond tree groves and fields of bell peppers. “It's a very small farming community. If you like country living, Le Grand is that,” says Realtor Martin Villanueva, who works with Realty Executives of Merced and has about two decades of experience in the area. The Le Grand High School Future Farmers of America organizes many of the community events, and there’s an Agriculture Academy at the high school. There are vintage downtown homes and larger farmhouses with acreage on the market in Le Grand.

Bungalows, ranch-style houses and farmhouses in Le Grand
Le Grand is centered around Le Grand Avenue, where the community park and schools are located. The town itself is mostly composed of grid-style blocks of homes, with some historic options in the middle of town. These bungalows date back to the early 1900s through the 1920s and range from $200,000 to $300,000. The southern part of the community, outside the little downtown strip, has ranch-style homes built in the '80s that also range from $200,000 to $300,000. These houses have yards large enough for garden beds, which are often landscaped with boxwood shrubs, agave plants and palm trees. The outskirts of the town offer farmhouses with an acre of land or more, and can start from $800,000 and go up to $1.25 million depending on acreage. The town hasn’t seen much expansion or new construction like other parts of Merced County. “Le Grand is growing slower, not as fast as Merced, Atwater and Winton. The people who live there have stayed there, and every once in a while, you have new people looking for land secluded from big cities,” Villanueva says.

Events with the Le Grand High School Future Farmers of America and in Planada
The community’s events are often hosted by the Le Grand High School Future Farmers of America, including the annual Denim and Diamonds. Founded in 2015, the event includes a dinner, dancing and auctions. Another of the organization’s gatherings is Easter for All, which has an egg hunt and games. For more events, locals can drive 5 miles to Planada, which has an annual springtime Community Day with a parade, craft vendors and deep pit barbecue. Planada also has a Trunk or Treat in October, where attendees can participate in a costume contest at Houlihan Park.
Marco's Tacos, the Pizza Factory, Rancho Market and more retail beyond
Although there aren’t many restaurant options, Le Grand has a couple of casual spots in the middle of town. Marco's Tacos - Le Grand, a food truck, serves authentic Mexican takeout, including burritos, tacos and carne asada. The eatery is so popular that people often call ahead to place their orders. The town’s other restaurant, Pizza Factory, serves pies and salads in a vintage interior, with checkerboard floors and an arcade corner. Residents shop at Rancho Market for some basic groceries, but for fresh produce and meat, locals must drive about 5 miles northwest to Lute's Market in Planada.

Le Grand Union Elementary School District and more education
Serving kindergarten through eighth grade, Le Grand Elementary School has a C-minus rating on Niche. Le Grand High School has a B-minus and a couple of specialized pathways, including their Agriculture Academy and Medical Academy. Merced College and the University of California Merced are both nearby for those who want to stick close to home.

Le Grand Community Park and more nearby parks
Locals like to eat outside at the centrally located Le Grand Community Park, which has shaded picnic tables, public grills and a pergola. Houlihan Park, located 5 miles northwest in Planada, offers a covered playground, a splash pad and picnic pavilions. At Edward Ray Park, about 10 miles south in Chowchilla, athletes can visit a skatepark, a ballfield, a volleyball court and a basketball court.

A 15-mile drive to Merced and more transportation
Le Grand is a car-dependent community. It’s about 15 miles southeast of downtown Merced via Le Grand Road. It’s also 25 miles north of Madera. The Bus, Merced’s transit system, has a stop at Le Grand Community Park. Those who practice can visit the Holy Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or a few other churches in Le Grand. The closest hospital is the Dignity Health Hospital - Mercy Medical Center, about 15 miles away in Merced. The closest airport is the Chowchilla Municipal Airport, located 10 miles away, and the closest major airport is Fresno Yosemite International Airport, which is 50 miles from the community.
