Leavenworth features wooded cabins and a European village
In Central Washington's alpine forests, Leavenworth is a Bavarian-style village with German restaurants and European architecture. Nestled in the Cascade Mountains, its eclectic cabins lie within a festive atmosphere, surrounded by outdoor activities for all seasons. "People in Leavenworth enjoy the proximity to lakes and rivers," says Tobi Linck, an area local and broker at RE/MAX The Collective. "The Icicle River is very nice because of the rafting, water sports and proximity to ski resorts in the winter. People move here because there is something to do all year long."
Spacious contemporary homes and cabins
Houses are on a sloping terrain with evergreen forests and rocky mountain views. Leavenworth features custom contemporary and cabin-style homes and many are reminiscent of chalets, incorporating wooden elements, a spacious layout and floor-to-ceiling windows. Prices range from $250,000 to $2.9 million, depending on home and property sizes, while the median home sale price is about $775,000. Condos in the area cost between $410,000 and $640,000.
German village with pubs and its own Oktoberfest
Leavenworth is well known for its European-style village, characterized by German pubs and dessert shops. "It is a Bavarian village, so there are a lot of German restaurants, bars and very nice hotels," Linck says. "It's most congested during the fall because it has its own Oktoberfest." Its signature annual event, Oktoberfest, happens on the first three weekends of October, with craft beer gardens and live music performances. One popular downtown eatery is Andreas Keller Restaurant, which serves hot pretzels and chocolate cake in a cozy cabin-style interior with live accordion music. München Haus serves sausages with apple cider sauerkraut in a shady outdoor food court with picnic tables and views. Residents can pick up groceries at Safeway or Dan's Food Mart, which has a deli and a bakery.
Hiking trails and boating in the Wenatchee River
Known for its historic railroad bridge, the Old Pipeline Bed Trail is a 2-mile hiking route along the rocks of the Wenatchee River. Another green space is Waterfront Park, with a sandy beach and a calm river current for swimming and paddleboarding. Enchantment Park has baseball diamonds, a skatepark and a bike pump track. Residents can also hike the Icicle Ridge Trail, with panoramic views and wildflowers that bloom in the spring. Also nearby, the Plain Valley Ski Trails include more than 15 miles of cross-country ski trails on beginner-friendly terrain.
Like much of Washington, forest fires are a recurring threat to structures in Leavenworth, particularly during summer and fall. Fires can also contribute to poor air quality. Avalanches also pose a risk in Chelan County, particularly near the Cascade Range.
Highly rated schools with hands-on work experience
Alpine Lakes Elementary School earns an A-minus grade from Niche, and students can learn how to skateboard because the school received the Get on Board grant in 2025. Icicle River Middle School has a B-plus, with a Blue Origin Club that encourages STEAM learning through classes centered around outer space. Cascade High School also receives a B-plus and offers the Cascade Discovery Program, which allows students to work alongside scientists at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery.
Getting to Seattle and nearby airports
Although most residents rely on automobiles, the Link Transit system provides public transportation throughout Chelan County. U.S. Highway 2 goes through the center of Leavenworth. Seattle is roughly 135 miles west on Interstate 90, and Wenatchee is about 20 miles southeast on US-2. The Pangborn Memorial Airport (EAT) in Wenatchee offers domestic passenger flights, while the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) offers travel to worldwide cities.
