Shopping and natural recreation along the Connecticut River
Just a short drive from the Vermont-New Hampshire border and the Connecticut River lies the city of Lebanon. This small community has a downtown area, forested trails and plenty of shopping options. Prospective buyers will find refurbished historic homes, rural farmland and cabins, and everything is connected by major roads and trails. Dartmouth University and major medical centers are also close by. “Lebanon is a place with an overall great quality of life,” says David Brooks, the deputy city manager of Lebanon who has been a part of the community for over 20 years. “The area has tons of jobs and a number of ways for people to get around the community.”

Upper Valley major roads and buses
Interstate 90 and U.S. Route 4 are the major roads for daily use, connecting locals to nearby communities like West Lebanon. Many area residents work in the healthcare and education industries, and Interstate 91 allows access to nearby hospitals like the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center or major institutions like Dartmouth College, which is 6 miles to the north. Residents can also use the free Advance Transit bus service, which runs all around the Upper Valley for commuting and daily travel. Burlington International Airport is around 92 miles away in Vermont.
Cape Cods and refurbished older homes
The median housing price in Lebanon is around $450,000, which is just slightly higher than the U.S. median. Along the community's streets, homebuyers can find what Brooks describes as classic New England housing, with ranch-style, split-level and Cape Cod-inspired designs being most common. Houses were commonly built in the mid-to-late-1900s, but several new apartment and condo buildings have gone up in the last 10 years. “Lots of the older homes in the area have been refurbished or repurposed into apartments or duplexes,” Brooks says.
Larger two story homes can also be found along the streets of Lebanon.
Lebanon has modernly renovated homes that still retain classic elements resembling cap cod homes.

Downtown parks and rail trails
Colburn Park is Lebanon's most central green space, offering an open field with picnic tables and a bandstand. This park has become a prominent spot for events in town, ranging from summer movie nights to annual festivals for the whole community. Residents can also use the Northern Rail Trail, a 59-mile trail that runs through the city center and continues to Boscawen. “There are special parts of the trail that get groomed for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, so it is really a four seasons kind of park.”
Dining in the heart of downtown Lebanon
Dining options include Lucky’s Coffee Garage and Salt Hill Pub, which has nightly specials and cocktails. “All of the restaurants in the downtown area are very well established,” Brooks says. “Many of them have been around for over 20 years.” The closest Walmart is 4 miles west of downtown, and Price Chopper is in the shopping area known to locals as “The Plazas.”
Colburn Park events
One of the area's biggest events is the 'Tis the Season Lebanon's Downtown Winter Celebration in Colburn Park in December. Festivities include live music, horse-drawn carriage rides and plenty of hot and cold refreshments. The Lebanon Farmers Market is another popular event with fresh produce every Thursday in Colburn Park in the summer or Powerhouse Mall in the winter. For more frequent events, the Lebanon Opera House hosts everything from operas to musicals and movie nights.
