Situated along a bend in the Kiskiminetas River, just 34 miles from Pittsburgh, is the small suburban neighborhood of Leechburg. This Pittsburgh suburb is teeming with local businesses in rowhouse-style buildings along hilly sidewalk-lined streets. It also offers community events throughout the year, giving it all the charms of small-town living while also being close to the city. “The thing I like about that area is that they’re commuting distance to the city; you could be on a freeway in minutes, but it also has a more rural feel,” says Denise Lewandowski, a Realtor at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. She’s been selling homes in the area for 20 years. Leechburg is a borough in Armstrong County, but Westmorland and Allegheny Counties butt up to the neighborhood. “You’re just a hop, skip and a jump from other counties,” Lewandowski says.

Homes

Queen Anne, Victorian and contemporary farmhouse-style houses can be found here, but Colonial revivals and ranch-style homes are the most popular. Many homes here are older and sit snuggly on small lots. Smaller one- to four-bedroom fixer-uppers can sell for under $100,000, while larger two- to four-bedroom homes can sell for between $100,000 and $200,000.

Schools

Kids can attend schools in the Leechburg Area School District. They can go to David Leech Elementary School and Leechburg Middle/Senior High School, all graded a C-plus or better on Niche. The Senior High offers a College in High School program, allowing students to enroll in over a dozen dual enrollment classes through Westmoreland County Community College.

Parks

Leechburg offers many outdoor opportunities. Along the Kiskiminetas River, which wraps around the southwestern end of the neighborhood, is the newly revamped Riverfront Park. It boasts a new kayak and canoe launch, gazebo, picnic tables, benches and walking trails. Less than a mile away, cross into neighboring Hyde Park by walking across the 600-foot bridge in Walking Bridge Park. For organized sports, residents can utilize the Veteran’s Memorial Field Park football field. There are also two small community parks, Kiski Avenue Park and Campbell Avenue Park, with play structures and open lawn spaces.

Shopping and Dining

Rowhouses occupied by local businesses line 3rd Street and Market Street, Leechburg’s main thoroughfare. Flit through clothing racks at Honeybee & Co. Boutique, pick up home improvement supplies at Chuck Smith Flooring and do weekly grocery shopping at Sprankle’s Neighborhood Market. Nearly a dozen restaurants also dot the streets. Sitting on Main Street is Happy Day Café, known for its extensive breakfast menu. Along Market Street, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, are Leechburg Pizza Company, Dizzy’s Bar & Grill, National Public House, Goat Donut Co. and Coco Coffeehouse. A few more shops are along 3rd Street, including Ciceros Bar & Grill inside Sprankle’s Market and Sharp Shooters Bar & Grill. For additional shopping needs, Hyde Park Plaza is less than 3 miles away and is full of familiar retailers and eateries like Giant Eagle Supermarket, McDonald’s and Big Lots.

Events

Community events are an essential part of Leechburg’s identity. The Leechburg Area Community Association is responsible for hosting many events here, including the newly launched Mingle on Market event, in which vendors set up booths, bands perform, and residents explore local shops along Market Street. Mingle on Market events are hosted on the second Thursday of each month between June and October. Another local favorite is Illuminate Leechburg, where local businesses host holiday events like ornament-making and letter-writing to Santa. This holiday event starts on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and runs through much of December. It includes an opening day holiday parade, Santa photo ops, and a shopping scavenger hunt.

Transportation

While public transit is not available in the immediate neighborhood, public buses with Westmoreland Transit stop once daily at the Route 56 Park and Ride, less than 2 miles away. Leechburg is conveniently located near Pennsylvania State Route 356 and Pennsylvania State Route 28, making travel to Pittsburgh, just 34 miles southwest, easy. The Pittsburgh International Airport is a little farther, at 50 miles away.
