Village of Winifred
Arnold Palmer’s design
Palmers Legends Country Club is the entry point to Palmers Legends Championship Golf Course. True to its name, the course was designed with Arnold Palmer. It sprawls across 7,180 yards, sporting stunning panoramas of Lake Sumter and the Miona Prairie Preserve. These views are enjoyed by those golfing and those being served fine cuisine at the country club restaurant, which has outdoor seating and wall-to-wall windows. For a quick dip in the pool or a casual neighborhood hangout, the Winfred Pool is within walking distance. It has set-ups for bocce, shuffleboard and horseshoes, but for more athletic amenities, residents just ride a mile to Bridgeport Recreation Center. Here, there are tennis courts and a family pool where guests of all ages can swim. Neighborhood pools like Winifred’s are restricted to residents and guests aged 30 and up. The Bridgeport rec center is also the site of various club meetings and weekly classes, such as tai-chi. There are over 3,500 resident-run clubs in The Villages, making finding folks with common interests easy.Courtyard Villas and Designer Homes
The Village of Winifred was developed in 2004 and 2005. Along its quiet streets are beautifully maintained lawns with subtropical front gardens, towering palms and mature live oaks. Courtyard Villas are on the low end of the price range, typically listed between the low $300,000s to $500,000. These properties sit on small lots and feature private outdoor courtyards. Floorplans include two- and three-bedroom varieties. Designer Homes range from the low $400,000s to around $600,000, but those with golf course views range from the low $600,000s to $1.2 million. Both Designer Homes and Courtyard Villas can feature stucco or vinyl siding.Dancing in the rain by Lake Sumter
During the day, Lake Sumter Landing Market Square is full of people dining, shopping and running errands. The Flying Biscuit Cafe is a popular spot that serves all-day breakfast. Cody's Original Roadhouse takes advantage of its lakeside location. But even from its waterfront patio, folks can still watch a game on a nearby flat-screen. “This is very much a pet-friendly community,” Caulk says. “You can sit outside so your dog can be at the table with you.” Around 5 p.m., the square becomes more of a venue, hosting live entertainment every night by the boardwalk. “Some bands you really have to get there early for,” Caulk says. “Because there won’t be a seat left. They’ll cancel for inclement weather, but if it’s just a drizzle, the band keeps playing and people are out dancing in the rain.” From country rock to disco, the variety of music played at the square is sure to get villagers moving. And when it comes to errands, Winn-Dixie, medical practices, banks and other convenient businesses are on the square’s fringes.Taking the turnpike to Orlando
Streets in The Villages are dominated by golf carts, but getting anywhere outside the community requires a car. Orlando is the closest city with an international airport, about 65 miles away. Access to Florida’s Turnpike is just under 10 miles from the neighborhood. The nearest hospital, UF Health The Villages Hospital, is 6 miles away.
