Peaceful West Shore living

Sitting on the West Shore of the Susquehanna River that carves its way through Pennsylvania’s capitol, Lemoyne offers access to the river and to the jobs of the capital, but with a buffer that keeps the noise and businesses away. Some residents can even sit in their backyards, watching traffic to City Island against the Harrisburg skyline, yet being able to enjoy the sounds of songbirds above them. Lemoyne is about convenience and comfort, with flavorful dining options, quality schools and fun family events like Kipona Fest and the Harrisburg Senators AA baseball team just a walk away.

Housing options from midcentury to modern

Within earshot of the busy Capital Beltway, duplexes and single-family homes sit within arm’s reach of each other, featuring backyards that are big enough for a cook-out but not much more. Most have off-street parking, with gravel spots or garages off of the alleys that thread their way behind the properties. North of Market, homeowners have a little more breathing room to spread out, as late 1900s ranch-style and split-level homes give way to New Traditional estates surrounded by leafy shade trees, some featuring views of the river as it winds its way from the north. Older houses on smaller lots in the established part of the neighborhood can fetch from $150,000 to $300,000. Featuring modern gourmet kitchens, soaring ceilings, stone fireplaces, three-season rooms, pools with slate patios and other luxuries, the homes in White Oaks and Bridgeport can easily fetch $800,000, with a select few selling for over $1 million.

City parks with a view

With skyline views, a ball field, tennis courts and a playground, Negley Park is convenient to the neighborhood. "The park offers really good views," says real estate agent Tonya Lucas, of RE/MAX, "A lot of people go there to watch the Fourth of July fireworks." With a bit more space to play, Memorial Park offers a larger playground, a gazebo, a ballfield of its own, and an active basketball court. It’s also home to the Lemoyne Borough Swimming Pool that gets quite active during the summer months. Across the Market Street Bridge, City Island is home to the Riverside Village Playground, as well as the City Island Beach, where residents will sunbathe in the sandboxes, play volleyball, or drop in from one of the boat ramps.

American classics and tastes of the globe

Sitting in a tiny 1930s Silk City dining car built by Patterson, the West Shore Diner is a relic of a bygone era, serving their traditional American diner breakfast and lunch daily. Nearby dining choices reflect the changing demographics of the area – Nalan Indian Cuisine and Korealicious share a parking lot, offering their takes on traditional cultural favorites. Not too far away the local outpost of the regional El Rodeo chain of Mexican restaurants serves up tamales and burritos in a Mission-themed location. Local sandwich chain and craft brewery Isaac’s serves up stuffed sandwiches – all named after birds – and stellar brews, in the West Shore Plaza. West Shore Farmers Market features local vendors, from produce and baked goods to jewelry and crafts, across two floors, while everyday grocery needs are served by family-run Central Pennsylvania chain Karns Foods. Just up the road, Capital City Mall is home to dozens of national retailers including Walmart and Sportsman’s Warehouse, while downtown Harrisburg beckons across the bridges, with a lively nightlife.

Making it easy to cross the Susquehanna

Capital Area Transit provides public bus routes throughout the neighborhood and surrounding Harrisburg area. Three bridges cross the Susquehanna from Lemoyne to downtown Harrisburg, allowing residents to choose the quickest path – the Market Street Bridge runs to City Island, while the other two go directly to the East Shore. Pedestrian bridges and a network of sidewalks and bike lanes makes Lemoyne great for walking and biking, although most residents will still have a car to get around. While Capital City Airport is only 3 miles away, it is for private, charter, and corporate flights only – residents head to Harrisburg International Airport, roughly 20 minutes away, for commercial flights. Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center provides 24-hour emergency care and is only a mile outside of Lemoyne to the north.

Riverside activities for all seasons

City Island and Riverfront Park, just across the river, are home to events throughout the year. One of the most unique events is Kipona Fest, which celebrates the Susquehanna River. Running across Labor Day weekend, this multicultural celebration offers family fun, a Native American pow-wow, live music, Art in the Park, food trucks and so much more, topped off with fireworks that are visible from the bluffs of Lemoyne. The Ice & Fire Festival, the July 4th Food Truck festival, and the Harrisburg Holiday Parade all entice residents to head across the Susquehanna. Throughout the season, residents enjoy the ability to walk over to watch the Senators play ball – it’s less than a mile over the pedestrian-friendly Market Street Bridge.
