Callaway offers natural beauty and convenience in St. Mary’s County
Eight miles southeast of Leonardtown, Callaway offers a blend of suburban comfort and rustic charm. With nearby recreational gems like St. Mary’s River State Park, you’re never too far away from an outdoor getaway or activities like camping, fishing and hiking. There are also a handful of businesses, including a grocery store, but Callaway is considered more rural than neighboring communities, like Lexington Park. Families benefit from the highly rated St. Mary’s County Public Schools, and Naval Air Station Patuxent River, 5 miles away, is easily commutable.
Popular home styles range from Colonial Revivals to ranches
Housing inventory is limited in Callaway, and homes often sell faster than the national average. “The market is pretty steady,” says Ben Kessie, an associate broker with Re/Max Galaxy who has more than 11 years of experience. “But now that interest rates are coming down, we’re getting some traffic.”
Home construction in the area spans from the mid-20th century to the 2010s, although most homes sold are from the late 20th century. Colonial Revivals are popular and often found in planned subdivisions, featuring multi-car garages and wide lawns. Ranch-style homes are also typical, frequently set on wooded lots that provide added privacy. “It has all the opportunities — suburban or rural,” Kessie says.
Prices typically range from the mid $200,000s to the low $600,000s, depending on size and features. While the median sale price is higher than in Lexington Park, the median lot size is much larger. “If you’re looking for bang for your buck, it’s a very good area,” Kessie says.
Leonardtown High offers career and technical education
Callaway is part of St. Mary’s County Public Schools, which are highly rated. Kids may attend Piney Point Elementary and Leonardtown Middle before advancing to Leonardtown High. The latter is top-rated and offers career and technical education through the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center. Programs allow students to earn certifications in fields such as carpentry, dental assisting and engineering.
