Waterfront living in Piney Point

Located in St. Mary’s County, Piney Point offers waterfront living along the Potomac and St. Mary’s rivers, with convenient access to Lexington Park and Naval Air Station Patuxent River, both 12 miles away. The community is known for its fishing and is home to the Piney Point Lighthouse as well as the Seafarers Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship, a vocational school for merchant mariners. Shopping and dining options within Piney Point are limited, but Lexington Park offers a broader selection.

Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and cottages along the river

Homes in Piney Point do not change hands often. “Not a whole lot of people move away because it’s a good place to be,” says Alvin Frazier , a Realtor with Home Towne Real Estate who has more than 23 years of experience. “There are lots of views, lots of scenery, and it’s rural, so it’s not overcrowded.”

Most homes in the area were built between the mid-20th century and the present day. Older properties include Cape Cods and fishermen’s cottages with wood siding in soft grays or pastels, often accented by exposed white beams. Newer homes tend to be larger and Colonial-inspired with wide lawns, high ceilings and decks. Many houses sit along the waterfront, sometimes with private beach or dock access. Depending on size and features, prices typically range from the lower $300,000s to the lower $700,000s.

Highly rated St. Mary’s County schools and career opportunities

Piney Point is part of St. Mary’s County Public Schools. Kids typically attend Piney Point Elementary School and Spring Ridge Middle School before advancing to the top-rated Leonardtown High School. At the latter, students can explore career pathways and earn industry-recognized certifications through the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, which offers programs in fields such as criminal justice, medical assisting and welding.

Bass fishing, beaches and the Piney Point Lighthouse

The Piney Point Lighthouse is more than a scenic overlook of the Potomac River. The historic 19th-century structure and its museum offer guided tours and maritime exhibits focused on lighthouse keeping, the Coast Guard and the Black Panther U-1105, a German submarine wreck. The grounds also feature a park with shaded picnic tables, a small beach and a boardwalk with a kayak launch. Birdwatchers can spot species such as bufflehead and brown pelicans, and, with luck, even a bald eagle. Nearby, Piney Point Landing provides another boat launch and is a popular fishing spot for striped bass on the St. Mary’s River, while Piney Point Creek offers a quieter place to catch white perch and red drum.

Neighborhood hangouts and freshly caught seafood

The Piney Point Market serves as a local convenience store and deli, offering everyday essentials, brunch favorites and Mexican specialties such as chorizo street tacos topped with pineapple and hot sauce. Next door, OCI Pub/Pizza King is a neighborhood hangout that serves pizza, wings and drinks in a laid-back, old-school setting, with occasional karaoke nights, concerts and holiday parties.

Frazier says the Piney Point area is known for fishing, crabbing and oystering, which translates to plenty of fresh seafood. Less than a mile away, the Ruddy Duck Seafood & Alehouse is a popular spot for craft beer and crab cakes with riverfront views. In Lexington Park, you can find more shops and restaurants, including cafes, bars and Weis Markets.

Commuting via state Route 249

Streets in Piney Point generally lack sidewalks and bike lanes, so most residents drive to get around. Maryland Route 249 runs through the community, providing access to Lexington Park and Naval Air Station Patuxent River. “Most people who work in the area are probably commuting 30 minutes or less to their jobs,” Frazier says. Some of the largest employers include:

  • MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, 16 miles away
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, 94 miles away
  • Dulles International Airport, 98 miles away

Flood risk for low-lying areas

Piney Point’s waterfront setting puts some low-lying areas at risk of flooding, especially during coastal storms, storm surges, high tides and strong winds.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
